Won't match the book but solid work from both Sinise and Malkovich. Sherilyn Fenn is nauseating though.

I love the book, I remember reading it first at school years ago, and have loved it ever since. Therefore this film always had alot to live up to. Its good, and the two leads are excellent, but for me it can't compete with Steinbeck at his best. A solid adaptation, but nothing more.

Malkovich portrays a "slow" person much better than Hanks or Penn, in this fine film about how far friendship and loyalty can stretch a man.

If this doesn't make you even think about shedding a tear you're not part of the human condition. Amazingly written in the first place and given a sympathetic treatment with this presentation.

This movie is worth watching many times over. An innocent giant with blissful ignorance, dreams of a brighter future as his best friend struggles to keep him out of trouble.

It's a good story, but overall the movie just didn't make me feel much anything. Maybe I just felt that the efforts were a bit childish, or just lukewarm in general. The only thing I felt for was the old guy and his dog, but otherwise, just no. It could have done so much more with the scenery, too, it could have all looked gorgeous, but it was another missed chance. It's not bad, and I was entertained enough, but it's just a very safe play-by-the-numbers kind of a film.

Solid, somewhat plodding adaptation never quite breaks free from feeling like a study aid; it lacks any subtlety, spoon feeding some seeds and payoffs (Walston underlining his cowardice in putting his own dog down); while well performed, especially by Sinise, Walston and a swing-for-the-fences Malkovich, the characters don’t feel like characters, but more like “Symbols” – this may have been a problem carried over from the original text (unread by me), but it makes for static, frustrating drama.

I mean, let's face it, it's all about the ending, and since I already knew it, the experience was lessened. I thought this adaptation was perfectly fine. Nothing special, but it made the fairly short book into a feature-length film, so I guess it was a success. Gary Sinise was good. I wasn't always sold on John Malkovich's performance though. It seemed more calculated and less natural a fair bit. I'd probably recommend just reading the book.

This is a really well done drama film. John Malkovich gives an outstanding performance and Gary Sinise is also great. The script is great and unpredictable. I highly recommend this film.

Good and faithful adaptation to a better book. Sinise and Malkovich do a great job of demonstrating the chemistry between the leads that made the book such an endearing classic. This may deserve a higher rating, but it'll need a more recent viewing to confirm.

The book was brilliant but I didn't expect much from the movie. It wasn't terrible but not by any means great. Malkovich pulled of a good performance, though.

A well-made period piece that doesn't stand out compared to other Great Depression movies, but still good enough. It retains the same melancholy of its source material, and both Sinise and Malkovich do a great job with their roles. It's depressing but very good.

I haven't read the book, but from what I've researched, this version followed the text quite closely. The simple story is so touching because Senise and Malkovich create characters that feel real. In the end, I truly cared what happened to them.
