Really weird movie. Kind of reminded me at times of Godard's most chaotic work like Week End. Maybe I would have appreciated it more if I was Brazilian, but I found it pretty bad and it felt very long even though it was only 90 minutes. I had a lot of difficulty following what was going on and why, and found myself not particularly caring. Has some interesting scenes, but not enough. Definitely different, though.

G's most emotionally moving work. Corisco was not the last. Coirana walks around with band of singing peasants, defying Horacio, blind landowner who has the city on his payroll. Antonio is back from the shadows for final job. But 'last' cangaceiro ends up making him open his eyes to see 'who true enemies are' - those who enslave, abuse and kill the poor and dispossessed. Songs, screams, shootings. Glauber envisions a Brazil where people actually has a chance to overturn everyday endless disgrace

Again, Rocha's strongest achievement is in sound design and the use of song for narration. Other than that, it's kind of like Jodorowsky with about 90% of the surrealism removed. If that doesn't sound dull to you, well, it is to me. I had a really, really hard time making myself care about what was going on or who was killing who. It does move at a good clip, at least, but I was still pretty bored and disinterested, despite appreciating how unusual it was.

Takes the good things from the first film, the music, the composition, the characters, the action, the social commentary, and fixes up the negatives, uneven pacing and letting the commentary overtake the the story, to make a much stronger film. With fewer dead moments those that remain have actual impact and the flow is much better, keeping the viewer engaged.
