"November" is based on Estonian novel "Rehepapp" by Andrus Kivirähk, a bestseller of the last twenty years. The film is a mixture of magic, black humor and romantic love. The story is set in a pagan Estonian village where werewolves, the plague, and spirits roam. The villagers' main problem is how to survive the cold, dark winter. And, to that aim, nothing is taboo. Sometimes hard to follow, which made me confused whether I liked it or not. I found some parts good, other not that much. It has some pretty cinematography though.

So strange, wow. Dark Estonian folklore and superstition, the dead side by side with the living who feed them bread. Then they enter the sauna where they turn into chickens. Oh, and did I tell you about the speaking and flying pipe beast?, a contraption out of some death metal surrealism. The stark and heightened b/w images are unremittingly odd and dreamlike. So much so that the lack of genuine suspense turns the film slightly droll/dull. Nevertheless, a communication from the beyond.

It might have been helpful if I was more au fait with the underlying Estonian folklore, but there was plenty of oddly comic weirdness to enjoy here. The stark monochrome photography was very pleasing, and the cast supplied a wonderful array of characterful faces for the camera to enjoy. It maybe felt lacking in story to an extent, but I have a feeling another viewing might reveal a bit more depth. Interesting.

The story isn't always there, it kind of meanders a bit, but this is a feast in other ways. The stark, powerful whites that Sarnet used created a harsh atmosphere and the visuals in general are just a blast to see. It's an unapologetically odd movie, especially to those (like me) who aren't steeped in Estonian mythology. It's because of the imagery, cinematography and direction that it can overcome it's relatively weak story and be great. B/W really helped set the tone here, too.

Tone deaf comparisons to directors like Tarr and German are completely wrongheaded.Yes it's shot in high contrast black and white, features a lot of ugly people with craggy faces and has moments of unexpected humour, but it really has nothing in common with the _substance_ of those film makers, nor with their specific engagement with time/space.This is an aesthetic creation, a visually impressive, but hardly exceptional, attempt to communicate a dream like vision of a long lost world. That's it.

A bit of a slow paced, boring and blend first half, followed by a pretty good second half. The story telling and the overall style was much better in the second half. However, I expected a bit more of an eerie atmosphere from this movie. It wasn't that memorable after all.

November is one of those films that I admire more than I actually like it. There's some great craft going on here and it's an ambitious project playing with tons of ideas, but it felt kind of all over the place for me, and every time I started to get drawn in there was something that took me out. Even though it didn't totally work for me, there's so much talent on display here on all levels that I wanted to like it more. It kind of feels like it wants to be a Tarr but doesn't quite get there.

This is just a beautiful, bleak movie with a lot of folklore behind it. From witches to deals with the devil and werewolves, it's got all the creepy stuff happening and it's certain to please anyone who is a fan of B&W aesthetics. I loved every crazy moment of it and some of the images will stick with me for a long time. If you're not afraid of just settling into watching something surreal and weird, I definitely recommend watching this one.

It's a love story with some drama set in a fantasy world. Shot in black and white for artsiness sake. I guess if you are studying to be a filmmaker you'll thoroughly enjoy it. BTW, are they giving away "horror" tags to every movie released lately? What is happening? Why would this movie be tagged as "horror"?

Elusive and beautiful, this is somewhere in between a fairy tale and gritty peasant fare. Captivating and bold from start to finish.

Always a welcome surprise when a movie astounds me in the way November did. Absurdly beautiful film with a bit of Tarkovsky thrown in the mix.

This has got to be among the ten weirdest movies I have ever seen. That would be a fun list to put together. November is pretty to look at, at times mesmerizing, the score is effective, and the acting hits the spot. It is just so jam packed, unfocused, and off the wall, it is hard to recommend to anyone. And I don't see myself wanting to revisit it anytime soon.
