Under its affective and well-structured narration, the film hides an exploitative and moralistic tale on love and commitment. It says, "to leave someone who loves you for an asshole is like raping and murdering his wife and daughter", which is far from acceptable! Then the director offers retaliation for that! He says, "Torment your ex by using the power of mimesis in your story". O.K. Justice is done, then what? Could be something if its main conflict wasn't that shallow and lame.

I thought this was very good. The story isn't too complex that it's hardly understand and Ford has a good visual eye for detail. The story was sad, mean, upsetting, intense, and sharp. I thought just about all of the acting was good as well. Michael Shannon is always an absolute joy to watch and I loved Gyllenhaal and Adams. Overall the movie has great pacing and a well written story. Worth an easy watch if you haven't seen it yet.

I respect the craft behind it. Top-notch all around. Its dual layered psycho-noir revenge tale is constantly entertaining, elegantly told, satirically thought-provoking, and often damn creepy. I can't help feel, though, that its basic premise, an artist saying the inexplicable through art, is a bit contrived, forced... What I'm trying to say is, Tom Ford just masturbated right in my face and for some reason I kind of enjoyed it.

Beautifully shot and an engaging cinematic experience. But until I rewatch it (which I'm looking forward to), I'm deducting some points. Because as much as I love the idea of dual layer narration, I didn't find it satisfying here. If there aren't more connections than I picked up on the first time around, I think that Adams' storyline is pretty disposable. As for the acting, Gyllenhaal (who I normally like) is overdoing it, Taylor-Johnson is very good, and a hard-as-nails Shannon is on top form.

God this was horseshit. We have a dual narrative : the "present tense" is an infuriatingly passive art curator. And then there's the manuscript she's reading which is an emotional allegory for her past marriage. So she lies around reading this Cormac McCarthy story, lies around in bed, lies in a bathtub. Flashbacks, regrets. Everyone spills adjectives about themselves WITHOUT DOING. What an absolute waste of a great cast, set design. Also, awful editing that Nic Roeg would be ashamed of.

A relationship is ended by a woman whose superficial, bourgeois tendencies too closely resemble those of her superficial, bourgeois mother. The man, accused of weakness, writes a novel about a man who learns to be strong (that is, to kill): through doing so he exacts vengeance on his ex. Perhaps this film is intended as a comment on our taste for revenge, but it does tend to come across as justifying it, especially when those who reject us are shallow women who fail to perceive our true virtues.

I'd really wanted to dig this completely and it does offer some excellent scenes and acting, especially from Taylor-Johnson and Shannon. However, the dual layer narration only had a few connections, but leads to frustratingly nowhere. It's nothing but an empty, dark little exercise in despair, thinking itself more clever than it actually is. *Okay

A rather gorgeous effort. The story-within-a-story segment was very effective, unbearably tense and unpleasant in parts, and quite affecting; I thought it linked well with the other stories. Solid acting throughout; Shannon in particular is great, and I can't get enough of Adams at the moment. I could nit-pick about the arty aims of this film, and how successful they ultimately are, but I'm not going to. I think it'll take me another watch to totally engage with it, but this is some fine cinema.

Not as intricate as the multiple layers would've allowed for, but still a worthwile and inventive revenge story carried by a great cast, especially badass shannon. Ford nicely contrasts the shallow and apathetic reality with its dirty emotional truth boiling underneath.

The surprisingly intense story-within-a-story, and its analogous treatment of the relationship between the main character and her ex, gives way to a fairly potent (albeit arch) examination of the power of metafictional narratives and the ability of fiction in general to express and transform emotion and experience.

A cinematic gut-punch in the best possible way; Ford expertly weaves three separate narratives into a poetic, haunting tale of acrimony and bitterness, while simultaneously telling a riveting and terrifying thriller on its own terms (the opening is as uncomfortable, suspenseful and horrifying as any set piece in recent memory). Superlative performances all round; Gyllenhaal and Shannon in particular have rarely been better. An uncomfortable watch, but one that lingers and grows in the memory.

An engaging, well-told story of long-gestating revenge, not the kind of callous, violent retribution as apparent in the film's seamlessly integrated framing device, but one that is rooted in a more solemn, psychological sentiment. Performances are top notch across the board, notably Gyllenhaal who deftly navigates dual roles and Taylor-Johnson - words I never thought I'd see in the same sentence - as a depraved and vile maniac. Along with A Single Man, that makes it two for two for Ford so far.

This has to be one of the weaker scripts in recent memory. The dual narrative definitely doesn't do anything to make it worth it since one of them is just Amy Adams looking distraught and dropping the book every 15 min. But inside the Cormac knockoff book is some good stuff. Although this rural revenge thing is getting a tad played out.

The acting really saved this one (especially Shannon, who is the best actor working today) I liked when it was inside the novel, but if you want to set your movie in the south everyone won't be wearing TOM FORD GLASSES so you have to throw in some shit of Amy Adams rolling around her bed wearing TOM FORD GLASSES. Outside of the novel every piece of dialogue is utter shit but at least they're wearing TOM FORD GLASSES. "I did something bad, so bad, so evil, I had body autonomy" TOM FORD GLASSES.

Here's what I can say: there aren't many films I watch anymore that leave me scratching my head some hours later. Not that Nocturnal Animals is confusing. It's actually insanely engrossing with Ford's fashionista aesthetic. He's got an excellent eye for detail and editing. And I think, in the end, I get it. But if I do, it's not exactly that... great? There's not enough on Adams' end of the story to leave any emotional resonance, so we're left with, "Hmm. Oh. Okay. Neat, I think. Yeah."

A gorgeously shot thriller with a legitimately innovative structure. It is essentially a revenge film embedded inside of another revenge film- one psychological and one physical. This shifting perspective lends itself to some lucid, almost Lynchian, moments. Ford wasn't afraid to veer into deep waters with this, and what a treat it was. For me, the best overall film of 2016 and one that I will revisit often as a great marriage of style and substance.

I had the rare pleasure of knowing literally nothing about this movie going in, so the way it developed was even more rewarding. The screenplay and editing for this are out of this world. As each of the three-ish narratives moves forward, they inform and contextualize the other two narratives in an extremely well-balanced way. It's one of the smartest films in recent memory and it deserves a second viewing.

A good example of a weak script in the hands of professional actors. You get a step up in the portrayals on show & they really are trying to make it work, in fact the directing is trying to make it work too, but the script is just too vapid. Worse, when it tries for real immersion, it becomes superfluous & melodramatic. On the plus side, the plot within a plot device was a unique way to offer an untethered insight into Gyllenhaal's char's impressionist reaction to events unfolded.

Framing narratives can often feel lite and unnecessary, but the story-within-a-film story here is (despite its fiction status) intense as fuck and utterly engrossing -- the narrative outside of it works brilliantly against it as it quietly examines cathartic creativity and how it may affect those it alludes to, delicately teasing out the character relations and doing so in an appropriate order. All the acting was superb, intelligently directed and shot, and parts of this are really unforgettable

Powerful in its premise and its pacing. Even though the story within the story is a work of fiction, it's extremely upsetting in all the right ways, and makes you constantly wonder what Susan could have done to make her ex husband write it? When you finally understand both stories, it resonates with you and adds a lot more skepticism about the ending. NOCTURNAL ANIMALS is a mesmerizing potboiler about a woman reading a book manuscript. Think about that for a minute. Tom Ford's remarkable command of cinematic language elevates a gimmicky concept into an addictive thriller that explores how people get under your skin, and resurface in the most unexpected ways. Ford pulls no punches, examining the consequences of physical and emotional brutality. Not for the faint of heart, but not without a clear humanity of its own.

Tom Ford definitely has a strong visual style. The look of everything feels so meticulous. There are great performances here that deliver on a script that's slightly lacking. Aaron Taylor-Johnson really surprised me. His performance was so transformative and definitely scary at times. Michael Shannon also great as usual. Ultimately, I think the message of this film is muddled. If the film tried a little less hard to be ambiguous, I think some of its more nuanced moments would have hit harder.

Everything about this concept, from its parallel narrative threads to its sharp couture visuals, is so high in the stratosphere that it risks sterility and pretentiousness, but after all it lands with a bit of grace. A gorgeously mounted, smartly written, superbly acted (especially by Michael Shannon) piece of multi-layered storytelling, as a real-life crumbling marriage and a fictitious, tragic quest for revenge intertwine. Not for all tastes - how you feel about the audacious opening credits will probably determine how you feel about the whole thing - but for connoisseurs, a fascinating and rewarding experience; the highway-abduction scene is truly wrenching. I found the creepy revenge movie within the movie a bit disturbing and manipulative, almost exploitative. I did not get out of this movie what the descriptions says - that the woman in any way felt threatened or personally disturbed by the book or the fact that it was dedicated to her. In the end, the real "revenge" seems to boil down to standing up his ex for dinner? Is that supposed to be a joke?

The story within the story is some of the rawest shit, damn. The way it's presented and acted makes it seem disturbingly way too real. The way the movie leaves you guessing why that story is being told is well done. I wasn't satisfied by the ending at first, but a while later it clicked and I now enjoy it way more in retrospect. A film-within-a-film that plays out like The Neverending Story. If I hadn't known this was an adaptation I would have presumed the debutant guff had been tacked on to fill out a humdrum thriller and give Amy Adams more screen time. The kidknap/revenge story is decent enough - well directed, acted, and adds some tension - but the rest is criminally dull drivel. Shannon is the standout (again), Gyllenhaal decent, and Adams does her thing - whatever you think of that.

An impressive outer shell. Great visuals, great narrative structure. Everything in between is, to parrot this film's favourite word, weak. The story-within-a-story starts strong and ends on an unfortunately predictable note whereas the main thread is unfocused and undercooked. Something about the pure simplicity of this movie really got to me. Obviously you're in for some great acting with these superstars, but the storytelling is superb in this movie. Satisfying, in a way that it is not too ambiguous. Just right, quite impressive for a fashion designer his second attempt. The story within a story was an interesting idea, but they should have used another actor for her husband in their marriage. Amy Adams is miscast as a villain here. The weaving between past present and future feels a bit sloppy for me. The ending scene with Susan and Edward is pretty impressive. It was hard to carry three stories even with good storytelling. I think the film could have used another 30 minutes to wrap up.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, Armie Hammer, Isla Fisher, Michael Shannon (excellent), Laura Linney, Aaron Taylor Johnson.

This movie resonated with me in ways I wish it didn’t. It was quite fascinating how the writer was able to portraying Edwards feelings in his novel and how he took his revenge on Susan so subtly yet profoundly, Susan didn’t believe in him but way he took his revenge proved that he was truly talented.

This was a movie I felt like I should be enjoying more than I was. The story within the story, a Funny Gamesian scenario, is nothing particularly new, but is relatively compelling. I didn't feel like they did enough in the regular life or flashback scenes to totally tie it all together, though, and there simply isn't enough going on there. Shannon is good as usual as a kind of mumbly police officer, and Adams and Gyllenhaal are both solid, but it ultimately falls a little flat. Just pretty good.

This had been on my watchlist for years and I finally got to it this evening. On one hand it creates visceral reactions to some of the scenes, and on the other I found my attention drifting from time to time during some of the slower scenes. Very beautifully shot and well acted. It's well worth a viewing, but somewhat over the top with some of the metaphors. 7.3 for me.

An artsy relationship drama wrapped around a banal and violent revenge flick. I am not sure who the intended audience for this is. Both stories don’t really land and the endings seem slightly anti-climactic. The acting is great and there are some fantastic scenes, the sum is less than the parts.

Nocturnal Animals is a gripping, immersive film with fantastically raw emotion, which is why its lack of resolution is ultimately so very disappointing.

Emasculatory revenge fantasy that relishes in the mental anguish of its protagonists. A tough watch you have to be in a certain mindset for.

The role was made for Gyllenhaal, and the rest of the cast was amazing too. Unique story structure and very tense scenes (like the car scene) really made the film memorable. This needs a rewatch.

...I mean... Slightly sufficient vote all thanks to the novel's scenes. And the continuous shifting between real life and fictional one is too much distracting

Well made, but not a very enjoyable watch. High on symbolism, it is both gritty and thoughtful. Painful finish. Outstanding performances by Michael Shannon, Amy Adams and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Gyllenhaal had a hard time keeping up, but not bad.
