Nocebo

La forme est réussie, le fond est débile.

There are some redeeming elements to Nocebo. Eva Green's performance for one, and the creeping ambiguity in the film's opening chapters. However, Nocebo commits an unforgivable crime in playing up to outdated south-east Asian stereotypes rather than working with the plot to denounce them. This failing leads to some awkward narrative bumps that spoils any hope of Nocebo ending up as a cult classic in the vein of 2005's Charlotte Gainsborough led Lemmings.

I live in a country where most caretaking and many cleaning jobs are occupied by Filipino foreign workers. Most Filipino people I have known to be good hardworking people, some bad as with any group, but none of them are possessed by vengeful demons. With all the xenophobia in this world, movies about suspicious ethnic minority people just rub me the wrong way, despite its late attempt at a semi-corrective twist. And Nocebo has an extremely hackneyed premise in every other regard.

Horrible from beginning to middle (where I stopped watching it when I realized what a waste of time this movie is).

Nice idea, but as with most "shudder" films, poor quality.

I watch many horror films and I can handle all kinds of violence, gore, torture etc. but the first scene with the dog and the ticks had me almost puking out my spaghetti. Edit: one week later still thinking about it and again completely grossed out.

Horror with social conscience. Viva Perón!
