This movie has one or two twists too many. Alan Rickman and Mary Steenburgen are very good in their roles but the script lets them down. Another rewrite of the script might have fixed this movie.

Is Nobel Son worth your time? Probably not, although if you do start to watch it, at least it'll intrigue you enough that you'll feel compelled to finish it. It's a caper film with more twists than it knows what to do with and a director who thinks that showing off is more important than cohesion. It's style over substance. But, hey, it's not often boring -- even if its 110-minute running time is a little long -- and its actors, particularly Alan Rickman and Mary Steenburgen, put in good work.

Loony, over-the-top farce really shouldn't have worked at all (especially after the lumpy and off-putting opening scenes), but once the story takes hold (and Rickman and Steenburgen's hilarious performances catch fire) the film becomes a lot of fun, even if the sheer scuzziness of the mostly repellent characters makes it difficult to root for anyone. A shame that DeVito and Danson are basically cast into the wind, and the finale lacks punch; such nasty characters deserved a more gruesome fate!

Good. This is a unique and refreshing take on the old payback/getting-even theme. A Nobel laureate's promiscuity and scandalous past come full circle when his son is kidnapped, setting into motion a treacherous and devious game of cat and mouse. Its hard to elaborate on the plot here without giving away any spoilers, but suffice it to say its a pleasently surprising fun watch and remains fluid throughout its 105 min runtime. Definitely worth a rental.

Maybe the theatrical cut changed from the premier at TriBeCa, and I hope it did, but the version I saw was all over the place, didn't use any of the actors to their potential, and didn't make a lot of sense-there were too many different things going on at once, and it way too hard to keep track of everything.
