Ciki and Nino, a Bosnian and a Serb, are soldiers stranded in No Man's Land -- a trench between enemy lines during the Bosnian war. They have no one to trust, no way to escape without getting shot, and a fellow soldier is lying on the trench floor with a spring-loaded bomb set to explode beneath him if he moves. The absurdity of their situation would be comical if it didn't have such dire consequences. (United Artists / MGM)

It's nice to films with a simple premise succeed. It's not a complex story, even though the background of the film most certainly is, but it captures deep realities in the character interactions and 90 minutes of tension. I seem to be not quite satisfied with endings lately and this is no exception, but I can see why it is the way it is.

No Man's Land is an absolute imperious and nearly infallible triumph. In the soldiers' anomalous situation, Tanovic manages to pull all the right strings. Absorbing and ferociously penetrating, it also censures and notably criticizes the impracticality and futilities of our modern world in which we inhabit. However, the ending is exiguous and you ultimately feel wanting and despondent. An ironic yet tragic drama that ranks as one of the best foreign films I've ever seen.

Just like a punch in the face, this film is a simple, brutal and very effective way to say something. Sometimes it's very healthy to be punched. Highly recommended, not perhaps as a film, but as a story and a message it carries.

What seemed like sharp, subtle satire back in high school comes off a little broad and nihilistic to me today, but it's still an effective and compelling allegory, and it explores its high concept in interesting ways, even if Tanovic rushes through some details a little too much at the end in the orchestration of his devastating final shot.

Personally didn't like the television reporter angle to the story and could of lived with her character being abolished. Intriguing premise in an all round solid movie.

The story is great and the actors are very believable but the directing is subpar and the two soldiers are shown in a way too negative light. Can't believe this stole Amélie's Oscar.

Contained in a small story about three men and one mine is a burning critisism against all the evils and wrongs of the modern world. The ending is by itself worthy of a hundred points.

Sometimes there's something so hopelessly absurd about a terrible situation that it can't help but be wickedly funny. Two soldiers -- one from each side -- together in a trench in no man's land, with a third man lying on top of a mine that will explode if he moves? That's pretty absurd. I could've done without some of the scenes with the pushy TV reporter, and the spare time could've been filled with more scenes with the soldiers in the trench.

A striking drama / satire where attempts at heroism or just plain dignity fight against the absurdity of war and politics ... guess who wins :)

One of the best films released on 2001. I don't like war-films, generally. But this one is very unique. It shows war from totally different point of view. And this does comply not only the "hatred" between serbs and bosnians but also to any "vicious" neighbors.

The movie is alright, but it never wowed me. The acting isn't always the best either. The final shot is pretty good though.

A true under the radar gem. No film has so directly and effectively attacked the absurdity of war.

A biting look at the Bosnian-Serbian war in the microcosm of a trench between enemy lines. It's particularly scathing of the UN involvement which at times is farcical. The film is most effective when concentrating on the soldiers, less so with the broad caricatures of the UN generals and the press.

Unfortunately the acting and cinematography are quite weak and really drag the film down. There are also several pointless characters who have way too many lines. Would have been better if the whole film was just the three men in the trench, trying to figure a way out of their predicament.

Engaging throughout. Would have given it an 80 if not for the overly pompous portrayal of the British UN official.

This is a great story, believable, touching, but the addition of the scenes with the pesky journalist and the snobbish british official are a farce.

Just a perfect combination of black comedy, satire, cutting political commentary and tension. Tanovic created a war movie where we care about no-one and everyone, and the plot device which restricts us to the one location is so clever without being gimmicky. The fact that it could work as a play proves how top-notch the script is. A truly remarkable debut.

This movie is not just a drama -- it asks some really important questions. The post-modern undertones bring depth to an already extremely watch-able movie. I highly recommend this movie, particular to students of philosophy or political theory.

easily the best movie ever to come out of the region, in fact gives me an intense desire to watch more. a fantastic war movie, where, the war takes the back seat to human drama--usually something i dont appreciate, but in this case it is awesome.
