No Fear, No Die

The denouement is a little over-the-top but otherwise great. The two leads are ridiculously good.

Vibrant, graceful, tragic. Claire Denis is a brilliant and unique filmmaker.

A identificação e o paralelo entre os imigrantes negros e a sujeição selvagem na rinha de galos é um ótima alegoria, mas mesmo assim não me senti confortável o suficiente para apreciar o filme em sua totalidade, o que provavelmente era a intenção da Denis. In which the exploiters become the exploiters. Denis meticulously films the joylessness of the hustle, and for what - a life in a cage so that someone else makes money.

Denis' authentic naturalism in painting things as they are makes for some gorgeous exterior shots, some usefully matter-of-fact detailing of a unique world and the jobs entailed, and a completely glamor-stripped expression of the cruel bloodsport within, but while details and visceral consequences stand out, it feels more like a fictional doc than a proper story, and in this regard its drama often fails to take flight, even when its ending is clearly trying. I see why this one's a bit forgotten.
