A mesmerizing collection of five stories from around the world, covering all human emotions from happiness to sorrow, optimism to cynicism, manic to depressed. The stories are apart from each other, but this doesn't hurt the movie itself - the last segment's emotional power is overwhelming even though preceded by Benigni's insane cab ride. Plus, how many american movies have segments in my home country? Jarmusch captures the finnish drunken mentality with honesty and precision.

Clever and overall a fun ride. Jarmusch once again takes us to a place that no other filmmaker does and gives us depression, good times and comedy all rolled into one.

Some sequences are better than others, but each of them fully displays Jarmusch's melancholy, surreal urban sensibility at its best. There's nobody I'd rather have take me on a night tour of a major city. My favorite is probably the NYC portion with Giancarlo Esposito as a brash, braggadocious street urchin.

5 different storys about Cab Drivers from New York 2 Paris.Every story has there own Charme. My favorite one is the New york Story with Armin-Mülle-Stahl. Really funny. Every Story is different...some are funny...some are sad ( especially the last one ) but overall it's a great Movie by Jarmusch, one of my favorite Independent Director's!

A very funny and very strange collection of vignettes about 5 different cab rides across the world. The last one feels a bit out of place, especially after Benigni's incredible 25 minutes, but it's still quite good.

The show stealers are Giancarlo Esposito showing us peak NYC, Paolo Bonacelli's straight-faced death at the hands of Benigni babbling about fucking animals, and Frederick Elmes bathing every city in romantic lights, each with its own unique flavor. Probably Jarmusch's funniest yet - the Finnish neighbors arguing about who to drop off first really got me. Also a beautiful late-era Gena Rowlands performance.

Night on Earth has that elusive vibe that only semi-obscure 90's movies seem to possess. Jarmusch's command over atmosphere is incredibly impressive, precisely because it seems so effortless. The five vignettes of Night on Earth are narratively separate, but they seem to sprout from the same stem; a love letter to restless nights in big cities. They're all to different extents fun, funny, moving and painful, but they're all human above anything else. There's really no reason not to watch this.

I have to disagree with those who say the five vignettes don't connect well enough to make one well-rounded feature. They deal with different people, places and concerns, but the themes and tone remain prevalent throughout, reflecting on humanity's similarities and differences across differing nations and cultures. This was a really engrossing and unique type of film.

A surprisingly very good movie. I must admit that I'm not a real big fan of Jarmusch until now, but with this movie I'm slightly becoming one. It starts off slowly with a nice little story that can only happen in Los Angeles. The second is more funny and so typical for New York (the German sentences by Müller-Stahl are great!). The European parts are more refined in their stories and so typically European in each their own ways that it's a real pleasure to watch them.

Unfortunately starts with its weakest segment but picks up from there. This movie highlights how scenes inside cars aren't as dynamic anymore since seatbelts became mandatory. It's refreshing to see dingy old parts of major cities that have since cleaned up.

It’s far from a unique idea that Jarmusch’s films are like poems, but it’s hard not to see this as reminiscent of mid-20th century urban beat poetry, if often funnier and more off-kilter.

Consistently high grade anthology film is a perfectly judged and calibrated collection, ranging from the hilarious (Esposito) to gently bemusing (Rowlands) all the way through to quietly devastating (Pellonpaa) while never missing a beat (Benigni’s is arguably least successful simply for being a “skit” rather than containing any observation). Beautifully performed all round, and gains profondity in its snapshots in an abstract sense, with Jarmusch careful not to ladle on any heavy “aha” moments.

Five cities, five stories of strangers meeting and making a connection, one way or another. It has some very bleak moods of cities in the night, all set up to very different scenes and character personalities. There's a lot of dark comedy here and great acting in all the stories. I personally preferred the stories taking place in the US, plus the one taking place in Finland. Makes sense that the Finnish story is the bleakest and most depressing! Just so many moods in this one.

Mixed bag of quality, but mostly mediocre. LA- awful 'grass is greener' message. NY- enjoyable, great dynamic acting between Esposito and Mueller-Stahl. France- meh, fun enough to watch with a reasonably amusing ending. Italy- Benigni is painfully unfunny. Iceland- wants to be touching, though seemingly for its own sake. Should've been an Australian segment, where the driver gets beaten and called a racial slur that doesn't match his ethnicity.

The plot has a better grip of reality on the american stories; the european ones gain value when they assume themselves as pure fiction and a representation of an image of that particular place/situation. The fictionalization of society can push things to a meaningful metaphorical representation, but, at the same time, it can push things to a certain extreme where things become a caricature that has no real connection with reality (both things are on the movie). A very enjoyable experience.

Its filmic pleasures are plenty: a worldly travelogue of urban nocturne, a collection of entertaining performances, a fun and funny disposition. But I have reservations about this "it takes all kinds" mentality, which strains to apoliticize characters and often translates into a naive and frustrating lack of empathy. The Paris episode in particular is borderline offensive. Rome is obnoxious, but Los Angeles, New York, and Helsinki are more successful, to varying degrees.

Not all the vignettes work--the first one with Ryder and Rowlands is too on the nose, and the Paris based story is strangely bitter--but when it gels, it's up there with Jarmusch's best work. Stahl and Esposito have surprising chemistry, and their culture clash segment reflects his view of America being a nation of immigrants whose cultural dynamism is produced through the harmonious/ discordant interplay of similarity and difference, while Benigni steals the show as a manic cabbie.

There is some acting talent here but I feel it's kind of wasted on Jarmusch. The writing is generally bland, with aversion to prejudices a recurring theme in most segments, and the Rome one starring Benigni is basically a single bad joke extending forever. The New York segment has the most oomph - I really enjoy Rosie Perez's short stint - but even that makes its tepid point early and then goes nowhere.

"Night on Earth" is a film that I find very enjoyable and charming despite many glaring flaws. The writing is simple, often bordering on downright simplistic, while Jarmusch is curiously obvious and awkward about his themes and juxtaposition. Still, the film has great energy that never lets up, a relaxed, beautiful atmosphere and a very fine cast. And, trite as they may be, the vignettes are all -especially the New York one- pretty, cleverly paced and gently moving.

Similar to Jarmusch *Coffee and Cigarettes*, except takes place in a cab, in five different cities, essentially five vignettes. Vignettes in films like this tend to be hit-and-miss, and while not everyone hits it out of the park, all of them are at least mildly entertaining, and even poignant. Jarmusch does a good job of capturing each city. Solid film. ps71

The first great film to come from Jim Jarmusch. With an excellent cast (Rowlands, Ryder, Esposito, De Bankolé and Benigni being the best) and great dialogues, this is a total success: most segments grab you immediately and even the ones that don't surely make up for it in the end. Laughs, sadness and humanity.

1st story: Decent. Ryder has a great character, although her acting is lackluster. 2nd: Alright, not as funny as it should be. 3rd: Terrible, contrived and riddled with puerile irony. 4th: Great. Benigni gives the best performance of the film. 5th: Good, although a bit slight. Overall: Too diverse and loosely connected to add up to a satisfying whole, leaving a kind of "That was completely average" feeling.

It sounds like an idea for a movie, or at least like the germ of an idea for a movie -- a sort of hack's Dead of Night, transforming the traditional omnibus into, more precisely, an omnicab. But the fill-in for this structure is unfulfilling: didactic cornball little anecdotal one-acters that don't add up to much because each of them on its own is too near a zero. And too near a dead end. The best part of each segment falls outside the storyline: mini-albums of static shots introducing each city

Three of the stories are varying degrees of lame. I liked the Finland segment (with a bunch of Kaurismaki regulars) and the Italian segment was decent. Still, two-fifths of a good movie isn't a great average, and ultimately this ends up being another example of why the portmanteau format rarely works for me. Winona Ryder is absolutely terrible, and the Tom Waits oompa-oompa shit gets old fast.
