Night of the Devils

This is a decent, atmospheric quasi-vampire thriller. A lot of about this reminded me of the areas explored in Berberian Sound Studio for some reason, which points to it having areas in common with the other supernatural Italian horror films of the 70s. It seems pretty well made; decently shot and scored, and the actors are all fine. Some of the effects are a bit ropey, though. I don't know the tale which inspired this, but the story works well, and leads to a satisfying conclusion.

Decent feature length version of Tolstoi's The Wurdulak, previously filmed as part of Mario Bava's I tre volti della paura (aka Black Sabbath).

The movie does a good job ratcheting up the tension. I just wished I could've watch the film in the original language and not the bad English dubbed version. The music is overly dramatic and distracts from the film at times. I found some of the effects to be surprisingly cool and effective. Extra points for the downbeat ending.

Atmospheric version of Tolstoi's The Wurdulak which was previously filmed as segment in Mario Bava's Black Sabbath. Ferroni's film resembles that film surprisingly little; it's slow paced and saves a lot of its action and gore till the end. That's not a bad thing as it spends it's duration wisely and let's the score, photography and eerie locations build up the mood. Some of the FX work is a bit outdated but it's a minor fault. Definitely worth a watch for fans of italian and/or gothic horror.
