It is rare for me to say this, but I have no idea what is going on in this film. There is no discernible plot. No character is saying or doing anything for any reason that can be figured out. This is the lowest film of 1,100 I've rated, because even the worst other films I've seen have a plot. This has none. It's an absolute waste of time, film, thought, and oxygen.

As a story Night Monster (1942) is a complete mess. Doesn't make sense one way or the other. However as a scare-fest... it's a lovely piece of camp. Has two favorites in the horror genre Bela Lugosi & Lionel Atwill, both just there to distract the audience. Once a matinee idol, now taking cheesy parts in horror movies, Nils Asther is here making things more absurd. Plus several others likable faces causing a ton of confusion, which never gets explained. Lovable horror for all the wrong reasons.

The film is nothing more than an anaemic rehash of 1932’s Doctor X, and inexplicably kills off its two best assets in Atwill and Lugosi early on before staggering to its unexciting finale.

Though top-billed, Bela is wasted as a butler with a squeamish streak in what emerges as one of Universal's weirder story lines. This is often outlandish and verbose but rarely dull.

OK, sure, it's Bela Lugosi and Lionel Atwill, but even if you love old-school horror you don't care. When this was released on tape you just knew the guys at Universal were getting close to the bottom of the barrel
