Nicolas Cage and his hair star in their hairiest adventure since OH MY GOD LOOK AT HIS HAIR. The cheat "twist" ending is completely unsatisfying, and Tamahori ruins yet another movie with his plastic visual style. I have to wonder what contractual requirements forced Moore into this, because Philip K. Dick must be rolling in his grave. Next!

I am a sucker for high concept sci-fi. But some concepts are simply too silly for a narrative structure. It does not help that the rules of the concept are never defined probably.

Awful movie with a great premise. The premise of a man who can see two minutes into his own future is stolen from a PK Dick book with which it shares no other similarities, and carries over none of the wit. Nicholas Cage is an engaging hero with a questionable hairdo.

More nonsensical crap from Cage. He should see into the future to see how weird his hair gets and to make better spending decisions so he isn't in roughly 263 straight to video releases a year.

Another Nicolas Cage action movie, which means silly, unrealistic, bad dialogue, but kind of fun. I think this is kind of the pinnacle of Nicolas Cage's bad haircuts. I love the concept, but unfourtunetly the movie isn't as good as it could have been. I would love to see a movie as good as the Bourne series, except with this sci-fi element in place. The whole movie felt forced, and the ending kind of made about half the movie void which was annoying. Julianne Moore wasn't very convincing.

This movie has the BALLS to pull the ultimate con on its audience. I'll spoil it for you so you don't have to watch it: The entire third act of the movie is a flash-forward dream. That's right, everything you thought the movie was doing was, in fact, *A FUCKING DREAM*. I can't remember the last movie with the balls to just punch its audience in the dick like that. -1 point for being a terrible movie.

Some confusion about whether the protagonist sees "the" future or simultaneously sees every possible future, but more generally this is a very under-written tale of a man with magical powers who is gradually brought to the realisation that it is better to give up one's desire for freedom and independence and instead cooperate with a security apparatus whose motives are bound to turn out to have been benevolent after all, something he must hitherto have lacked the foresight to understand. Not SF.

The story starts out relatively well as I thought the idea was interesting and the way they implemented it was cool. Unfortunately, as more and more time went on the story became both more convoluted and more inconsistent. The villains were paper thin, as all we really know about their motivation to hate the U.S. is that they are foreigners. This stuff could have been forgivable had they not bent their own rules just to advance plot and had it end pre-twist. Easily avoidable.

If the FBI spent half as much time looking for these half witted terrorists as they spent looking for Nicolas Cage, they would have owned that bomb plot. If the terrorists spent half as much time planting their stupid bomb somewhere instead of tracking down Nicolas Cage, they could have blown up a major city. Also, Nicolas Cage and Julianne Moore completely mail in their performances and how on earth did Peter Falk stumble into this. Conclusion: this movie sucks.

Against all odds, I didn't think this movie was all that bad. There was just ONE point in the movie where I thought to myself "this doesn't fit in with the information we previously had." Unfourtunately, that point was the apex of the movie. Why did this otherwise OK movie have to muck everything up with that one big snag? Who knows. In any case, I'd watch it again. :)

Not as bad as I thought it would be, in fact I was pleasently surprised that it actually has some redeemable qualities. Certainly some bits of it are silly and poor but the general premise is quite interesting (thanks Philip K. Dick). Certainly it could've been better and by the end you feel like you've only watched about half a movie.

It pulls one of the biggest, most blatant cheats in the book, but more than that it's a bad career move that lacks even a trace of the wit or innovation that could give us some insight into what the hell Nic Cage thinks when he picks scripts. It is also yet another showcase of the mighty dearth of talent possessed by one Jessica Biel.

Reasonably competent retelling of a Phillip K. Dick story, "Next" moves quickly and offers a plot based around how prediction changes the future which does not double back too much. It gets a little dramatic at times, and I find Nicholas Cage competent but unconvincing and not pleasant to observe in this film. Jessica Biehl does the same thing she does in every film and it works okay.

It might surprise you but this movie is not "Knowing". It's, in fact, a different Nicolas Cage movie that has a kinda clever premise but is utterly dumb from start to finish. Nic Cage's hair is a bird, Julianne Moore is playing an absolute madwoman and Jessica Biel... is also in this movie. Thomas Kretschmann plays a villain, which tells you everything about this movie you need to know.

This is an insane movie that is constantly at war with itself. On the one hand it is an awkward, relatively predictable romance between a stage magician (Cage, with incredible hair, plays his role unusually sweet and naive) and the girl he sees in visions of the future (Biel, in a nothing part). On the other hand there is a group of EUROPEAN TERRORISTS with a NUCLEAR BOMB and there are MILLIONS OF LIVES AT STAKE if Nicolas Cage doesn't stop them RIGHT NOW, and, just like, what!?

The main concept makes for lots of fun sequences (see Cris' opening casino escape) but also one cheesy/creepy romantic subplot ("I'm her future"), while its dramatic potential ("Life is supposed to be a surprise, isn't it?" "It would be nice") is never realized. The cat-and-mouse action is entertaining when you ignore the cliche Euro villains and the fact that he's running away from the good guys for no real reason (and he ends up helping them anyways, except not really-thanks, cringe-y twist).

This is, in a sense, the platonic Fun Bad Nic Cage Movie. It's got a plot that only exists to string cool moments together, lots of reasons to overact, stage magic, ridiculous lines delivered sincerely, and a light sprinkling of terrible CGI. It hangs together surprisingly well despite the story making next to no sense, and has enough intentional humor to grease the wheels. Definitely recommended for Bad Movie Night.

The ridiculous premise of NEXT--which features a magician who sees no more than two minutes into his future--is a naked attempt to limit the tension-killing properties of clairvoyance. Still, giving the hero unlimited do-overs is bound to get old. But as in most recent Nic Cage movies, the plot is immaterial. The actor's commitment and ability to deliver inane banter with the utmost sincerity elevates the material; Julianne Moore's code-switching role as a hardass FBI agent is the cherry on top.

For a film roughly 90 minutes long, this one seemed to want to take its time. Unlike seemingly the rest of humanity, I have nothing against Nicolas Cage and think he's a charismatic guy, so he wasn't really the issue here (Julianne Moore and Jessica Biel were also fine). The plot just moved forward too slowly after Cage's character met Biel's, and it hurt that we never saw what the bad guys were up to, which made the tension ill-defined.

In "Next" Cage plays a Las Vegas magician who happens to be covering up the fact that he actually has a "magic" or "super" power. His character, Chris Johnson, can actually see into the future..but only 2 minutes ahead, and only about things that directly affect him. It's a high concept plot, based on a short story by Phillip K. Dick.

If you don't think about it, Next might be a passable action film that will keep you entertained for an hour and a half. For me, it was a disaster because it didn't adhere to its own rules. It also cheated me with the ending -- there wasn't one. I felt like we needed another hour of footage, and that how Cris' powers worked needed to be explained or at least remain consistent. There's nothing for the audience to recognize as consistent, and I just didn't have a good time with Next.
