Nouvelle Vague concerns the return of a man who may or may not have returned from the dead. The film's narrative is extremely disjointed and might be better understood as an essay on the idea of returning. (All Movie Guide)

At one point in this movie one of the characters says "who's talking?" which is basically all you need to know about this movie. Random people just start randomly talking and we may or may not even ever see who it is or why. I just thought this was really amateur, especially factoring in who the filmmaker is and ultimately pointless. Nice cinematography though.

This is Godard at his most self-indulgent and pretentious. It's pretty at times, but this just isn't my kind of thing. Not engaging and a chore to sit through despite the short run time. I've seen plenty of Godard I like okay, and some I like quite a bit, but this one is among the worst I've seen from him.

Godard at his most inscrutable. Despite my inability to grasp the picture's narrative, I still loved it for its visceral pleasures. The cinematography is gorgeous and the sound design is some of Godard's best, layering so many different sounds into a beautiful mess. Alain Delon gives possibly the best performance in a post-60s Godard film.

A major disappointment. 90% of the dialogue are copy paste of literature texts, which I'm certain is a deliberate but questionable choice. Recurring emphasis on existentialism element is very dull and hypnotic. Overall a beautiful concept but poorly executed.

Top-tier Godard, possibly even his quintessential late-period work (replete with seagull cries!).

It's been a while since a film has left me this baffled. To say I disliked it would be too strong, but I was thoroughly unengaged, no matter how hard I tried. There's a lot of playfulness in the dialogue, in the wordplay, in the use of French and Italian, in its combination with the film's elliptical nature, but pretty much everything about it fell flat with me. Similarly it's a rather well shot film with many beautiful compositions, but all of them felt fleeting and artificial. I don't get it.
