Although both The Comedy and Alverson's episode of The Sixth Year appear to align him with the cringe-y post-mumblecore sensibility of Alex Ross Perry et al., this film actually reveals roots that seem to go deeper into both Jarmusch-style minimalism and social realist Americana (which considering Alverson's prior folksy music career as Spokane actually makes a lot of sense). It's well done, maybe a bit simple, but like a better Matthew Porterfield movie sort of?
