Fields's last starring role is a rare exercise in surrealism. . . far from his best movie, but rather disarming and tickling if you catch it in the right mood.

W.C. Fields is monstrously unfunny. 65 minutes of cringing and boredom. The last 5 minutes were pretty entertaining though.

This film lives and dies under the assumption that Fields is hilarious. And he just isn't.

W.C. Fields of absurdity! Unfortunately this sucker didn't get another break. The last pure W.C. Fields creation. Must be great to be in a constant drunken daze to make something like this! Unfortunately his body couldn't take all the alcohol and he couldn't be relied on delivering anymore, pretty much only making cameos as himself for the rest of his career. So don't miss the master's last stroke of genius!

Fields' ill health is blatantly apparent; it's as if he knew this would be his last hurrah and threw everything he had left at the wall. Not all of it sticks, and the meta aspects are hit and miss, but some of the jokes are delightfully surreal, and there is a real creative freewheeling approach to comedy that is easy to appreciate. When it works, it is uproarious and ranks among Fields' finest work.
