A surprisingly entertaining and stylish thriller about the dangers of attention seekers and social media. The two leads were good together, and despite the logistics of the game Nerve (seriously, you have to suspend your disbelief hard), it was exciting to anticipate the "why" of its existence. Ultimately, the ending falls flat because the why is not that exciting and it wraps up way too neatly, but I enjoyed myself as a whole.

Seems to take inspiration from the Fincher flick Game in some ways. This is a surprisingly fun film despite the ridiculous plot which involves a social media game. The soundtrack and high school drama gives this a poppy upbeat sachharine quality that's cheesy and endearing at the same time. Juliette Lewis in the role of a mom is also very amusing. There's quite a few memorable scenes in this but unfortunately it has a pretty weak ending.

Nerve is essentially a YA adaption of a Black Mirror episode with all the push notifications turned on. The leads are charming enough and the sound track has enough booty shaking to make for fine turn-off-your-brain-entertainment.

Well-designed fantasy set in the era of Pokémon Go, Snapchat and post-Big Brother voyeurism. It can't escape from its YA stuff -- its final 30min feels dumb and too heavy-handed with the romance trying to breathe in a deep web thriller -- but it also taps into this age of nostalgia (80s score and gif montages mixing different internet times) and hyperconnectivity through anynomous experience. The moral is obvious (we are being watched and traced; unplug and live your life), but it delivers fun.

Real pseudo-flashy looking stuff. It's honestly pretty entertaining until the stakes get raised too high and then it seemed like they didn't know what to do with the film. Why is it every time people read a classic book they have to get the most beat up worn out copy. like fucking find a partner that respects their things.

Oddly makes me think of TOTAL RECALL (1990) in its placing its protagonist in an escalating fantasy world where reality and “the game” become more and more fragmented; Verhoeven loves his satire, but even he would know not to right turn into the cringy moralising of the final act, which becomes heavy handed and didactic, draining away any fun. At least Roberts and Franco are engaging and appealing leads, though the self-conscious call-backs to PRETTY WOMAN (!) seem clumsy rather than inspired.

Bahaha. The filmmakers saw some episodes of BLACK MIRROR and said, you know, we need a facile YA-romance version of that. Another film where screenwriters mistake their own personalities for that of their characters, which is explains why Emma Roberts' character is an unabashed fan of Virginia Woolf and the Wu-Tang Clan.

If you throw your brains right out of the window, it's an entertaining bit of teenage drama. The plot moves fast enough to keep your interest up and it does a non-too-subtle commentary on just how idiotic the social media is. Maybe my mind was just geared for a darker, Black Mirror -type of plot, but of course you couldn't have that in a teenage adventure movie. The most unrealistic thing was that there would have been an open source game like that and nobody ever tried hacking it before.

Very great concept! Even the ethical hackers are the real heroes of this movie. This deserves a series of episodes about the prior players' lives. Vee is like the Katniss of Nerve honestly. The details in the story are so meticulously well done! It's really a confidence-boosting movie. You'll feel like a real daredevil after watching this. You'll feel no fear.

a handchewingly immediate hypermodern satire whenever it commits to iphone set pieces of escalating nastiness slathered in digital dayglo, with even the lame YA shenanigans framed to emphasise their superficiality. alas there's only so much sucky writing i can justify (is the LVP 'you think that takes NERVE?!' or the secret teen durk werb hacker society? swipe to vote!), and the culminating indictment of gen z detachment/viewer complicity in violent spectacle is intolerably heavy-handed.

An interesting and abstract look at the nature of internet popularity/streaming. Merges aspects of Twitch, Twitter etc. into a real life game of dare. The dares escalate to a logical conclusion but it flows fairly well. It's a little far-fetched that you fail the game and lose all your money if you pass a dare, though. Tommy is the nice guy that finishes last, which is the most real thing in the movie. End credits are slick. Juliette Lewis is terrible.

"Nerve" is a small-minded sci-fi movie, but strives to be a poignant social commentary on the group-think Facebook era and anonymity of the internet. These are things that have been better explored elsewhere. This one never really lifts off from being a semi-entertaining, but intellectually dead teen girl movie. Who could expect more from a writer whose other credits include both a "Flashdance" and a "Dirty Dancing" remake?

Really dumb movie. It's definitely aimed towards teens my age, however I had trouble getting fully into this. Its full of dumb high school drama and dares that could've been darker and more intense. However I did find the second half more interesting than the first. Franco and Roberts are fine, and I get behind their character motivations, but what the hell is MGK doing in this movie? Was he a marketing ploy? He was horrendous and completely unnecessary as someone else could've played him. Meh.

For the first two thirds, this light thriller based around 'players' performing dares for the entertainment of paying online 'watchers' to win money from an anonymous organising group was much better than I was expecting. It's true that the dares were far tamer than what real people would choose without consequence but the concept was simple and intriguing otherwise. My main problem was the last 30 mins which just disappeared up it's own ass in terms of plot convenience ruining what came before.

Digital surveillance is every bit as present in Nerve as it is Jason Bourne, but the former underestimates the ability of its millenial audience to do its own thinking. As a movie, it gets off on the highwire fun of living on a dare and then pisses away its provocations by lecturing us on the loss of privacy and the fragility of identity, topped off with a metaphorical take on social media as an STD. What a buzz kill.

It's just so angsty. Nerve has some interesting parts, and honestly isn't the least entertaining way to spend an hour and a half. That being said, it's incredibly juvenile premise tries to be more profound to no avail, and partners itself with a not ready, heart-throb cast, and directors who were not able to tackle so ambitious a project, yet. It's just very shallow, though I can see why one would enjoy it.

There's a lot to mock in this movie, but if you ignore the technobabble, shitty hacking, and weird social media commentary, there's also plenty to enjoy. A lot of these points are for Dave Franco's straight-faced delivery of the line "slaves of the game".

The premise - an ordinary high school girl getting caught up in an escalating, globally-watched game of double-dog-daring - is enticing, but the execution feels pretty safe and tepid. This movie could have gone to a lot of darker and more interesting places, but instead plays it pretty much to the level of an MTV show. Also, it attempts to get into what I guess is a like a satire of internet anonymity at the end or something; doesn't really work.

Dave Franco and Emma Roberts definitely had chemistry and made the high stakes ante of the film come across as that much more powerful. The later dares were more surreal as these people were pushed to their limits all for amusement. It makes well tuned commentary about the attention span and think first mentality of todays generation all just to get 15 seconds of fame or to get rich quick. Nerve will get your pulse racing and have you on the edge of your seat. That is what good thrillers do.

Pretty mediocre. The concept is cool, but I didn't care for the way it was executed. It's directed and edited in the exact way you'd expect for its target audience - shiny, frenetic, and without depth. They did try to put some emotional stuff in there, but it didn't really work. I don't care for Emma Roberts or Dave Franco as actors, so that didn't help. The near-constant source music was super obnoxious. I wouldn't really recommend this for anyone above the age of 15.

Alas, Nerve loses its own before reaching any wise conclusions. The movie simply runs out of steam, out of time and out of ideas. "Nerve" offers a somewhat-sanitized-but-still-intuitive look at the online world and its real-world ramifications. I say "somewhat-sanitized" because I feel like the internet (under the guise of anonymity) would be WAY worse than just "go try on this expensive dress". It's a really cool concept for a movie that gets its tone mostly right, but does start to get contrived in certain areas and at certain points. There are lessons to be taken from the movie - even if they need more time in the oven.

So, should you let your twixt-ten-and-twenty kids see this? Superb story line and execution with little to no use of formulaic plot devices or simplistic teen music--which makes it easier for adults to watch. It's basically a Pokeyman Go game with money and FAME as the rewards, only with increasingly dangerous dares. It's right into the wheelhouse of its "I'm bulletproof" target teen audience. Nerve is a mediocre thriller that works effectively as a cautionary tale and gives you a little more to think about than the average film - even if its ideas aren't exactly challenging. It has a good premise that provides modest entertainment, the actors are passable, and its message - particularly as delivered near the end at the anonymous eggs of the internet - is a good one. This is the type of movie that'll work perfectly as a cautionary tale for middle school children.
