What, for its first two thirds, appears like a well-crafted but basic biopic, keeping us at polite distance from the man at its center, turns into some sort of post-modern western in Patagonia by the end. Which perhaps doesn't make it any more revealing -but at least it's the poetic sort of opacity of something like "I'm Not There." and not the hagiographic aquarelle of Larrain's own "Jackie".

Moderately interesting biopic with its own style which doesn't always look that good. The parts with Neruda are much more interesting than the parts with Bernal and his annoying narration, leading to an imbalanced story. The countryside scenes looked nice. Apart from that, a bit stuffy and political with too many warring suits. Necessary, but the social/poetic side of Neruda makes for a more romantic and creative film. Not Larraín's best, nor worst.

Perhaps rewards a greater knowledge of Neruda's works.

Loved the policeman, who is nearly a void on screen--Bernal plays him in a pretty buttoned up fashion. But when combined with his much more colorful narration, we discover a character--with all the conflicting desires we would expect to find in a person. The disjunction between screen and narration leads to a vibrant and even humorous portrayal. In this, Larrain seems much more interested in an individual's relationship to Neruda, rather than to Neruda himself--this, it seems, is appropriate.

Magic realism is entwined with an historian's sensibility in an intriguing examination of the intersection of art, class and power.

Very strong personality of Pablo Neruda is reflected very well to the movie. Fairly enjoyable story from start to finish and more importantly very poetic. The relationship of Neruda and the inspector were very sophisticated, their rivalry was universal and at the same time deeply intimate. And also that soundtrack was FANTASTIC

Not the most exciting political chase story I've seen, as more time is spent on Neruda's evasion rather than why he is evading. Bernal's character is more interesting because of his narration that ponders on his legacy in finding Neruda, exploring both his smug cockiness and the cracks in his confidence. After an amiable time spent on this chase (often gorgeously filmed in sun-burnt purple palettes), the final few scenes are amazingly thoughtful, humane, and don't take the easy way out.
