A young man and his fiancée visit the castle where he grew up. As the narrative, told in flashback, unfolds, it becomes clear that the boy's mother has been indulging in sexual peversity ranging from orgies to incest. Zetterling's second feature was adapted from her own novel and received sensational publicity at the time. The direct treatment of the subject matter - sex, birth and perversion - provoked something of an outcry from the press, who probably wouldn't bat an eyelid today. (Channel 4)

Highly charged, symbol-laden black comedy whose stream-of-consciousness telling of a young man's coming-of-incest among decadent sadistic hipsters often plays like some twisted mashup of MURMUR OF THE HEART and THE COMEDY. The Channel 4 summary there is gone but assume it was pre-Film Twitter: today's press would certainly "bat an eyelid" over, say, Scarlet Johansson ordering her underage son to jack his uncovered dink. (And you know if Waititi thought he could still get an Oscar for it...)

Zetterling throws everything at the screen, moving in and out of past and present, dream and reality, Freud and Marx (or Erlander at least), sex and propriety... and almost all of it sticks, largely thanks to a very dark sense of humour and a cadre of actors at their peak (or in Wifstrand's case, on her final sprint). A hell of a ride.
