Nattevagten - Dæmoner går i arv

God awful from start to finish. The actors speak a certain kind of 'theatre' Danish, that you have to be a native to hate beyond words, and I am just that. Furthermore, as a Dane, imagine a movie where Paprika Steen is not the worst part of it. Anyway, whatever. Bornedal is a hack.

30 years later we get to revisit our favorite night watchman and the vast majority of the original cast makes appearances. It was a trip I enjoyed but more for the memories than for new story which replaces necrophilia with suicide as its underlying focus. I very much enjoyed the opening, I wanted to clap like a moron when they show the moths in the light. I KNOW THAT FROM THE FIRST MOVIE! Sounds sarcastic but it's pretty honest. I just have a love for this thing that's hard to quantify.

Bornedal is a fine director, and arguably works much better within this genre than most others. But his writing has always been a bit janky, here especially prevalent in the meeting between characters and genre tropes. The first hour or so worked well enough, especially most scenes with the young cast, but as the story progressed, things slowly fell apart in contrivances, telegraphed twists and downright lazy plotting. A shame, because to my surprise, it actually had potential.

Gets the job done.
