You remember when your English teacher was spouting off some nonsense about how important it is for you to be an individual, a unique and proud manifestation of your own goals and tributes? It always went over my head. The only way I can think of to be unique as an individual is to watch this for a second time. The number of people that have sat through this movie twice has to be the smallest focus group ever! Anyways, I can't bring myself to do it.

I thought Napoleon Dynamite drew a lot of charm from the absence of plot/structure, a film content with going nowhere slow - this suffers from trying to shove that charm back into a generic sports movie archetype. But Jack Black is too likable to keep it from totally face-planting. What shines through the most is that the creators seem to have a genuine love of Mexican culture, even it it's coming through a very American lens.

Nacho Libre is.... inoffensive. Granted, I was not a fan of Napoleon Dynamite whatsoever, I actually thought this was a big improvement. Maybe its having someone as... simply funny as Jack Black elevating the material. It's not a great movie by any means, and often feels like its struggling to find its audience, but I can't fault it too much. At least it tries.

Me and my friends started counting how many times Jack Black breaks his Mexican accent, which was a fruitless endeavor because he barely had one to begin with. Classic Jack Black physicality and pretty colors make this a fantastic background noise movie.

Colorful and amiable with a lively soundtrack and leading man, but it's hard to disguise that there just isn't a lot to this story of a pidgin-speaking gringo who takes up wrestling at night and serves gruel to pious children at a brokedown orphanage by day.

Imagine being so fucking petulant and up-your-own-ass to shit on a film like this. Sure it's plastered with every 2000s cliché under the sun but goddammit it has heart. The Hess's almost wrote a carbon copy of Napoleon Dynamite but i don't really care since I'm enamoured with the world that Napoleon Dynamite takes place in and its characters, and this is nowhere near as good but fuck it i had fun.

The movie is just super awkward. Interactions between characters, the way the movie is shot, and even the story are all just done in this awkward way. Sure it's a bit heartwarming, but the awkwardness just holds it back. Not to mention that Jack Black can't do much of a Spanish accent. Maybe if you find super awkward interactions funny, then you'll enjoy this movie. Life is awkward enough for me, and this movie just didn't do much for me.

I can't remember the last time I zoned out so often while watching a film (sober). The whole thing is just so poorly-written and directed, and utterly pointless, it's impossible to keep concentration: Why would you? I didn't laugh once - not even a chuckle - throughout the entirety of this 'comedy', and to be honest mirth was never a threat. The scenery's nice, and for some reason I didn't actively "hate" Nacho Libre, I just have absolutely nothing positive to say about it whatsoever.

Like the other Hess film, the characters have no arc, do not move or grow: the narratives are an endurance test. Like me sitting through them. Not-so-ironically, the best moments come when Black breaks "character".

“I am, I am a real religious man.” Indeed, true religion is this: “to care for orphans and widows in their distress”. Bless your kind heart, Nachoooooo, in all of its overly dramatic glory, enigmatic of a film that expertly walks the line between goofy and sincere all the way to teary perfection in the soaring climax. Love the stillness and slow pace, amplifying both of the aforementioned aspects and giving plenty of space for the fantastic music, production design, and cinematography to shine.

This has never appealed to me, but having enjoyed Gentlemen Broncos recently, I felt like checking out another Hess film. It's pretty silly & not as frequently funny as it probably should be, but there's something very endearing about a Mexican Catholic priest aspiring to become a wrestling champion to win money for orphans. Could do without the fart jokes though. Aside: if you swapped Jack Black for Owen Wilson you could probably pass this off as a Wes Anderson movie.

Middling comedy is far too formless and sluggish to be entirely successful, resting on Black’s wilfully tamped down natural charisma; like Hess’ NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, this never develops a sense of comic timing or rhythm, and so never manages to build a proper head of steam, which means there are moments that work well in isolation (the feral midget wrestlers are good for a giggle), but never manage to cohere properly. A very marginal recommendation for Black.

Nacho Libre is a fantastic movie. I love the comedy of the movie. I love the mixture of Mexican-American culture in the movie that was probably a honest attempt to speak to a large US audience. This is a great kids movie. It has a funny cast with a main character that anybody can root for who is doing something good, even though what he is doing is looked down upon by his peers. I have always enjoyed those underdog types of stories. I have seen this movie 20 times and I'll watch it 20 more.

So much hate for Nacho yet I really enjoyed it and it's not because I'm a wrestling fan. As bizarre as the comedy is it really works and in a sense it's heartfelt. The wrestling matches are coordinated pretty well and I found the soundtrack to be catchy. Nacho Libre is definitely a guilty pleasure and I would absolutely consider revisiting in the future. 4 STARS

So, with such a rich cultural history to play on, you'd think Nacho Libre would be a better film. Written and directed by Jared Hess, who surprised the moviegoing world with the super-low-budget hit Napoleon Dynamite in 2004, this film has some of the same corny, off-kilter humor, but it's wildly uneven, not sure what kind of movie it wants to be. Another Napoleon? A Jackie Chan send-up? Another ham-it-up School session for Jack Black? (pluggedin.com)

I really disliked Napoleon Dynamite, and had actively avoided seeing this for a long time because of that. But this... this I don't mind. It's still not all of the way to good, but it's a big step in the right direction. It cares for its characters more than its predecessor, which helps the audience care for them too. That's probably Mike White's influence on the script. Some quality laughs and a likeable lead performance elevate the material.

i expected quite a bit from this film, mostly because of Jared Hess and the success of Napoleon Dynamite. First viewing of this, I might have watched about 30 to 45 minutes and gave up. But, I did the same thing with Napoleon originally, so I figured I just wasnt in the mood. Forgot all about watching it, until my son asked if we could see it. Watched it with him, and to see him doubled over on the floor at Black's "training sequence" was payment enough. 2nd viewing definitely found more to like
