Witty and cool - exactly what to expect from Jim Jarmusch. Jim's first color film and everything looks really nice and surreal - I can't believe he films on Earth, if you know what I mean. Also, Tarantino should've thanked Jarmusch in the credits of Pulp Fiction.

Nobody captures the languorous, lived-in reality of the less-explored corners of real cities to better effect than Jim Jarmusch. He has an unparalleled ability to raise the humdrum rhythms of city life to the level of off-beat poetic comedy, where around every corner lies in wait the potential for an encounter with the absurd or the sublime.

I don't think I could spend more than 5 minutes with any of Jarmusch's characters in real life, but watching them in a movie is reasonably enjoyable. There's a bleak undercurrent in the film, especially in the visual depiction of Memphis as a rusted out shithole, but there's also an odd sense of fun in the aimless atmosphere to balance it out.

"Jiffy Squid? Turn that damn thing off! Jiffy Squid." The first and third parts are great but the middle is boring and inconsequential even by Jarmusch's standards. I laughed for a long time when the Japanese girl asked Buscemi "fishing?" and he thought for awhile before responding "no". How are you supposed to respond to that? lmao

This one is okay. I don't care much for this type of narrative, and the way Jarmusch ties the tales together feels very self-conscious. Of the three stories, the first is the best. The second is a whole bunch of nothing and the third picks up a little bit with some witty dialogue, but I was pretty disengaged by that point. Sorta fun but also sorta annoying and ultimately seems pointless. I feel like Jarmusch makes movies just to show off how many hip musicians and cool actors he hangs out with.

The first segment was fantastic (the best of the three) and I was inevitably let down by the rest of the film.

Jim Jarmusch's Mystery Train is a masterpiece of deadpan charm, telling three tales of lost souls in a Memphis hotel. With a moody soundtrack, deliberate pacing, and wry humour, it transforms quiet moments into cinematic poetry. The cast, including Joe Strummer, deliver understated yet magnetic performances. The film's clever structure, tied to Elvis and Americana's ghosts, makes it a must-see, even for those unfamiliar with Jarmusch’s work.

Typically slow-moving Jarmusch meditation feels like a springboard to a more complex study of a community ala SHORT CUTS, but his subjects lack the substance and interest that would make the film resonate (Buscemi et al's segment is almost agonisingly tedious). What is left is the pleasure of seeing fine actors bump against each other, and on that level it works quite well – Kudo and Nagase’s segment works the best, though Braschi and Bracco’s awkwardly evolving intimacy is also fun to watch.

"Go for a spin in Earl's Caddy!" "Who's Earl?" Movie, as you would expect nothing less from Jarmusch, full of great scenes, but those little moments that make life interesting and somehow they feel so appropriate in films. All in all it's really hard to put a bad rating in Jarmusch's films but this one you can see he was learning. But it's in a sense even more raw and pristine and I liked variety of characters, storyline, setting... Will watch again.

Jarmusch's drifters are more than just the lens through which we see the mythos of Memphis, they are the mythos themselves. It's as if Memphis is a city where nobody lives (except perhaps wise old Screamin' Jay Hawkins in his blindingly red suit) and everybody is only passing through.

This film is quirky, weird and original. The script is interesting and you don't know what is going to happen. The cast is a weird mix but they really make it work. Overall I would recommend this film.

A handful of naive foreigners navigate their way through the crumbling American heartland. Unexpectedly conventional for Jarmusch, but the humor is quirky and the characters are mostly interesting, so it becomes surprisingly fun. Worth it for the complicated analysis of Americanism.

Jarmusch's appeal has largely been in his ability to shoot America from an outsider's perspective, so it is no surprise that the best story in Mystery Train's multi-narrative program involves a young Japanese couple exploring the borderline alien terrain of Memphis which they recognise through pop iconography. In these moments we get a sense of the new global village, the extent of America's global reach, and the transience of cultural phenomena. The rest of the film doesn't measure up.

I got a kick out of watching the couple wander around Memphis (with suitcase in hand) in Far From Yokohama-- past the Arcade Restaurant, Staxx, Sun Studios, and the Elvis statue. Mitsuko's Elvis scrapbook was fantastic/hilarious. Loved the hotel desk duo Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Cinqué Lee. And of course Steve Buscemi in the Lost in Space segment-- The never really knows what is going on, but always gets the worst end of it guy.

I generally enjoy Jarmusch and I especially like anthology storytelling when he does it. I don't think it's as good as Night on Earth, but the mood of Memphis and the good humour from the hotel employees who string the movie together give it a very welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.

This is a crazy slow movie that was worth the time. This is a movie that I got lucky enough to finish. I was very bored and it was recommended by the best movie finding/reviewer I have had the pleasure of knowing, Adam, who found great obscure movies. He suggested this and I was bored and home alone so I rented this and I came close to getting off the couch and turning it off. Fortunately I didn't and the way the ending binds the story together is great

Maybe I wasn't in the right mood, but except for Nicoletta Braschi, the characters didn't work for me, and I'm not sure why they didn't (although the characters in the last vignette weren't very interesting, imo). Still, I loved the way urban decay the film captures and the Jarmusch's deadpan, kooky vibe.

A relaxed, hilarious and occasionally touching journey through a dry, surreal night in Memphis. The performances, the soundtrack and the atmosphere created are really fantastic, set a really dark tone overall. The Japanese couple have the best dialogue and Joe Strummer's story was the best overall and the Italian tourist was the funniest. A near perfect film.

There may be no better match for the deadpan absurdity of Jarmusch than the flavorful earthiness of Memphis. The city's endless, humid nights, ludicrously rich musical heritage that is often neglected, and bursts of battered personality around every corner undercuts Jarmusch's instinctive indie stateliness and brings rambunctious life to the proceedings. His script unfolds three stories that intersect in clever ways, each offering cogent observations about what it's like to be adrift in America.
