My Name Is Joe

Ken Loach delivers another gut puncher in the veins of 'Cathy Come Home', with Peter Mullan portraying a recovering alcoholic, drowned in the underbelly of Glasgow, to heartbreaking effect. The irony is that after watching it, you're going to need a strong drink. That and a wall you can stare into for a couple of hours.

Tenho dificuldade de encarar Loach porque é um cineasta que amo, mas que trata questões sociais pesadas que mexem profundamente com a gente, porém, o Mullan aqui traz um aspecto de sua interpretação que ao mesmo tempo carrega o filme nas costas e nos fornece um poço de empatia. RARBG.

A well paced romance at this film's centre is what makes it work, as its blossoming feels genuine because of how careful and deliberate the film treats it. It's just too bad Loach and Laverty sometimes don't know how to end a film, they just cheese it once their film hits its depressing zenith (despite the general mood beforehand being so wholesome and hopeful).

The heavy Scottish accents are nearly impossible to follow, so English subtitles are needed to follow along. A recovering alcoholic is trying to get his life back on track by working with a sponsor & taking one day at a time. He volunteers as a soccer coach for a group of young men. But when he tries to save one of his young friends from the retributions of the local drug boss, his efforts cause his romantic relationship to dissolve and his life abruptly turns to despair, chaos & regret.

Joe is a smart, well-meaning guy but he lives in such a lawless neighborhood that trouble just latches itself onto him. Almost TOO watchable and very conventional in a lot of ways, but still excellent and very down to earth as may be expected from Loach.
