The bar fight scene proves one thing: Even as a cripple, Daniel Day-Lewis has to kick someone's ass. I mean, it's got to be in his contract, right? "There must be at least one scene in which I throw the fuck down"

Great performances by Day-Lewis and Fricker, especially DDL. This could not have been an easy role to play. I loved seeing the portrayal of this Irish family with loving mom and stern dad, squeezed around the dinner table and also their interactions with the community. There were a few points where the plot seemed noticeably rushed, while at the same time, the movie felt quite long (not in a bad way). Bottomline: interesting story with exceptional acting by DDL.

This is perhaps the only film that tells the story of a handicapped person overcoming obstacles that does so without a trace of sentimentality. It also gives a great portrait of a working class Dublin family and features an inspired performance from Daniel D. Lewis and a very good one from Fiona Shaw.

Daniel Day-Lewis simply is the most brilliant actor of the new generation. He is pitch-perfect in almost every role he's in to the point where he could be in the discussion for best performance ever in several different films, this being one of them for sure. The movie is more or less a showcase for his acting ability and not much more, but that being said that is more than enough to make this a worthwhile and practically classic movie.

The kind of movie that lives or dies on its central performance. An otherwise clunky, clichéd inspirational TV-movie is elevated by the pitch-perfect acting in the lead role. I was surprised, too, because Jim Sheridan has a good reputation in terms of directing, but if it wasn't for Day-Lewis this would possibly be downright bad.

it's hard to pinpoint the lovable aspects of this movie. the end is cheesy, the premise is simple and the story is hell bent on cheap inspiration. but yet again, there you are, after the credits, with that great feeling that comes after you witness something extraordinary. i'm sure sheridan and christy brown deserve some credit in this; but i have a sneaking suspicion that daniel day-lewis runs the whole thing. it's his magic that you fall in love with and makes my left foot a classic.

An insightful look at a truly interesting character and his story. While some of the themes are dealt with heavily, and the more touching scenes come off as a bit melodramatic, Daniel Day-Lewis is absolutely fantastic in the lead. His performance is what's really on display here. Also, Hugh O'Conor was very solid as the younger Christy Brown. Good stuff.

The first half hour is definitely the highlight which manages to not only avoid the ever dangerous Worthy tone but also to be in turn funny, enchanting, gripping and at one point borderline surreal. O'Connor and Day-Lewis give two truly remarkable performances and the film has both humour and some touching moments to make up for a quite out of place bar fight and the the slow losing of steam up to a fairly poor and regrettably Worthy end (which, despite being true, the film didn't convince me of

Just to get it out of the way, yes, Daniel Day-Lewis is absolutely incredible in this. I wish everything else lived up to it. The cinematography was quite lacking, I felt - it looked like a TV movie. Despite not being very long (especially for a biopic), the script could've been tightened up a little too. Still, it's a nice story with some genuinely emotional moments, and I liked that the main character wasn't perfect.

my left foot has one of the most poignant stories of any film to date. as a film, it has some shortcomings, but none that can't be overlooked. Day-Lewis made himself what he is with this role. it feels so apalling after two hours, you're positive he is that man in that chair, and not some dashing actor.

My Left Foot gives us such a fleshed out picture of a unique man's life. Not only does Day-Lewis commands the minute-to-minute battle of nearly full-blown paralysis, and the torturous genesis of an artistic character, but Brown's realistically nuanced family and the working-class Ireland that oppresses them are brought fully to life.

Daniel Day-Lewis. I wasn't sure if Christy Brown was playing himself for the first twenty minutes. That's how convincing Lewis was. He's just an amazing actor, and this was basically a tech demo showing off his skills.

This one's all about Daniel Day and the young actor who played Christy Brown as a child. Those were two transcendent performances, and they're both in the same movie. I also enjoyed the affectionate (yet real...sometimes frighteningly real) portrayal of Brown's family--especially his parents. All very real characters. I wouldn't call this an "enjoyable" view, because Brown suffers a lot (the restaurant scene was was particularly brutal), but there's no doubt that it's expertly crafted.

Exhilarating. This is no disease-of-the-week weeper; it's an intensely moving story with just the right touches of humor, warmth, and poignancy. Fricker and McAnally are ideal as Christy's parents, and O'Conor is absolutely remarkable as the young Christy. Lovely score by Elmer Bernstein.

YTS.

"My Left Foot" is a good film that may actually fool you into thinking it's a great one, thanks to an extraordinary, physically demanding performance by perhaps the most versatile of actors, Daniel Day-Lewis and the also strong Fricker as his mother. Sheridan skillfully directs this modest and realistic depiction of poverty and disability that occasionally packs a remarkable emotional wallop and, overall, competently succeeds on its goals, managing to absorb without being quite so special.

Daniel Day-Lewis brings an "tour de force" perfomance, but the film itself is a bit too harmonic. and the movie would have been better if the some of the conflicts in the movie had been given a better focus. Still this was still a pretty fine movie, and it's very touching from start to end.

Powerful, moving drama is made all the better for its unsentimental portrait of Christy Brown -- a testament to Sheridan's direction and adaptation, but especially Day-Lewis' scorching, raw and completely believable performance. He is surrounded by an equally fine array of character actors: Fricker, Shaw and McAnally are exceptional, but young O'Conor stands out as young Christy, delivering a performance on par with Day-Lewis.

This seems at first glance the usual "overcoming all odds" Oscar bait, but what I love about it is how modest Christy's aims are. He isn't trying to win the Superbowl here, he just wants a date. Equally, Christy isn't an innocent, guileless figure. Quite the opposite, he knows what he wants and how to get it. He doesn't suffer fools easily. Because of this My Left Foot manages to avoid overblown sentimentality and remain an honest portrayal of a complicated and difficult man.
