This gets 30 purely because McAully Culkin's character gets stung to death by bees.

I saw this a few times a kid, and the Culkin scene was greatly amplified in my memory. I also realize it is ridiculous to say, but I forgot how heavy this film is. My thought process before watching this was, "oh, this will be a fun film to watch from my childhood", and then spent 100 minutes ruminating on life and death like it is a Bergman film.

A very sweet and touching movie. The saddest scene I have ever seen in my life was the death of Thomas J. Usually I am pretty desensitized to this, but not this time. Not only did this movie have a lot of drama, but it also had some very funny moments that had me laughing out loud. The cast was so good and worked well together and I was quite surprised to see Mac take on such a small role, even though it was highly important to the film. A Must see.

Some seriously out of time (of before time) roles coming from nearly all the actors, this proves to be one of the stand out movies of the early 90's.

I don't know if I had a crush on Anna Chlumsky when I was younger or what, but I have such a big soft spot for this one. Of course I haven't seen it since 91 or 92... I don't think I want to anyway.

Many may have seen this film when younger and thus harder hit by its emotional journey, ignorant of the tricks and techniques being used to tug at their heartstrings. I - filling a gap in childhood - just watched this and although parts felt cheap and cheesy, as if I had witnessed a magicians method by accident, there were elements that I can respect. Vada, although a tad precocious, as a character is nonetheless impressive. Although seek out a Nic Cage film for a superior bee-related death.

Quite sad, and pretty good. It's hard to find female characters in movies that are written like Vada---she was treated like a real human and not just some dumb kid.

Really good story, with really interesting character dymanics, I coulda just done without the weird teacher love story thing. I also feel like the girl was smart enough to not try and attack a bee hive? It just felt quite forced. But otherwise, it's a good movie.

Great stuff. Really makes you view certain life events through the lense of a smaller child. Generated a lot of nostalgia within me. The acting was okay overall, probably because I don't know how real childs act. Furthermore, the film had a lot of loose tropes which felt a bit too loose at times. However, this is really a minor thing. Overall, I really enjoyed this. Would like to watch this again. Vada is so cute.

I had never seen this film and didn't even really know what it's about. I don't mean this as a serious knock, but this is almost the ultimate Baby Boomer film of this era. It glides by rather effortlessly and is mostly about family and has a ton of really unimaginatively chosen 60's songs in it.

I would have really liked this if I watched it for the first time as a kid. It was mildly pleasant seeing it as an adult. :) It wasn't bad at all. I just felt like something was missing for me. However, I think this would be a great film to discuss with children about death during childhood.

Top badass moment? Vada sulking in the supermarket and throwing can after can from the shelf into the trolley. Am I the only one who thinks doing this without looking at the shelf or fumbling any of the cans, whilst the trolley is moving, was pretty clever? It's hard to make sulking look cool, so managing to do so is badass. No cats, decapitations or chainsaws.

For starters, why do they advertise this as a love story? Why is it titled "my girl"??! The premise "neglected child coming of age while surrounded by death" is nowhere near that. I guess happy kids on the poster sells more tickets. The story itself starts interesting enough, you could almost bear the often atrocious acting by valium culkin and anna clumsy (god, is it annoying when she runs!). But the second half spirals so out of control tonally, that it stays with you as a sappy mess.

My Girl exists for only one purpose: to make you cry. The first two acts are a pleasant, well structured coming of age story about an eleven year old girl, Vada. It's cute, but not cloying, somewhat forgettable, and generally inoffensive. But the third act is an absolutely merciless string of heartbreak and devastation, leaving the entire audience sobbing in its wake. This film will shamelessly feast on your tears but, since Vada is such a well written (and acted) character, you'll forgive it.

Bittersweet comedy touches on love, friendship, puberty, and most of all, death, but its telling moments are muted by an overall air of predictability. Appealing cast sparked by Chlumsky's mature performance. Followed by a Culkin-less sequel.

Compared to most childrens movies being made lately, this one is refreshing. Its a sweet story line, it doesn't relie on heavy branding, and its as close to real as a kids movie is going to get. Although with age it losses its entertainment value, its worth getting for a 6-12 year old kid.
