Best friends since college, Jules (Roberts) and Michael (Mulroney) made a pact that if neither had found someone to love by the age of 28, they would marry each other. Now it's their 28th year of life, and Michael just popped the question. There's only one problem: he popped it to someone else. (Sony Pictures Entertainment)

I like the idea for the film far more than I like the end result. The aggressively likable Roberts is (intentionally) miscast as Jules, Mulroney's character is not dreamy enough to be the center of a love triangle, and the tone is just too light and fluffy to do justice to the concept. But, man, what a concept. A romantic comedy where the protagonist is the villain and she knows it... and so do the filmmakers. This level of self awareness is rare in the genre and I kind of love it for that.

You know, now that I am older, 28 doesn't seem old. Julia Roberts is the villain of this film. This probably has the most people singing in a film that isn't a musical. Dermot Mulroney has the most forgettable face in film history.

Jules (Julia Roberts) and Michael (Mulroney) have been flirting on the lines of best friends since their short-lived love affair in college. They proposed that if neither of them had found a loved one by the time they were 28, they would marry each other. Nearing Jules's 28th birthday, Michael finally gets up the courage to propose; only he proposes to another woman. (Sony Pictures Entertainment)

Honestly it's pretty standard romantic comedy fare. It's got some laughs but hardly enough to keep someone that doesn't like the genre entertained. It plays like a pretty standard rom-com, except for the ending which is really the only thing that sticks out for me. Ultimately I didn't care for the film because I didn't care for the best friend, the groom or the bride. Props to Julia Roberts for having the gusto to play a person who's genuinely dislikable at times.

Pretty enjoyable romantic comedy thanks to the way it plays with conventions of the genre and Rupert Everett's scene stealing.

Remains to be one of the best (and few certainly good) romantic comedies in the last decades and eventough it's pure hollywood-ness, it represents what is actually good about that piece of land.

One of my guilty pleasures, mainly because I liked seeing Julia Roberts pretty much upstaged by Cameron Diaz (old nose)--it's funny and entertaining and Rupert Everett is hilarious. Recommended.

The characters are too much on paper. Not very real life, if you ask me. The first half of the movie is boring for some reason. May be because Julia Roberts in not really into her own. The latter half is exciting and moving.

I never came within miles of laughing at any point, but there is a kind of nostalgia to seeing Julia Roberts (complete with majestic MANE of hair) in a 90s romcom that makes it benignly and unambitiously pleasant, like a cold jelly sandwich on white bread. Not my genre, but she is the queen of it. Food critic & sports writer - what an annoyingly generic pair of romcom-ass jobs. Julia Roberts to be cancelled if screen caps of the scene where she's wearing a charcoal face mask get out?

I just was not able to buy in on the 'best friend' situation, but I guess at the time you could have sad endinds in movies in Hollywood. How Roberts accepted to be de bad woman in a movie is beyond me but the whole movie just kept me uneasy throught because of how toxic their relationship was.

The perfect subversion of romantic comedies played with heart and gusto, and a wonderful musical in disguise. Great performances about nuanced, textured characters. Many reviews note that these characters are idiots; most the rest of us know them as 'human'.

I'm giving this more points than it probably deserves compared to other films, but in terms of rom-coms this is above average. Julia Roberts plays a despicable character who is envious, jealous, conniving and deceptive. She makes every effort to sink a wedding and steal the groom-to-be for herself. Along the way to encounters some prehistoric version of email and brick phones galore.

Viewers are supposed to like "Jules" because she's played by Julia Roberts, even though Jules is, in fact, a dishonest and vindictive bitch. I don't watch romantic comedies, and I think this film is largely to blame for that.
