My Beautiful Girl, Mari

Definitely aiming for a Miyazaki feel: it's like Totoro with the adolescent issues of Whisper of the Heart. Unfortunately it lacks Miyazaki's charm and attachment to the characters. The animation style, however, is noteworthy: it seems to be a process similar to Waking Life but without all the jerkiness and floatiness. Lots of warm pastels and little detail. It's a lovely style I wouldn't mind seeing more of, and the score was nice too. It's a shame the film was otherwise so uninvolving.
