Listen, there's no possible way for me to be objective about this. There is no artist whose work means more to me than that of John Williams. Yes, this documentary is pretty much a puff piece full of lavish praise for its subject and minimal insight into the compositional process of any of these incredible scores (what else would you expect, really). And yet, I smiled my way through this whole film, got choked up a time or two, and felt warm and affirmed when it ended.

If you're watching this, there's a good chance you're biased toward the music of John Williams. I have no qualms admitting that bias. His music shaped my sensibilities to ALL music, to soundtracks, to film, and to how the score is the purest distillation of that artwork; more than complimentary, it should strive to be part of the film's DNA. I would've watched another hour of this to delve into the Alexandrian library of work he's produced.

I'll take any fix now that a new movie with a Williams score has become so rare.

Should I pretend to be objective? A well-deserved glowing and laudatory tribute to the man who has scored many a film buff’s life – while a little more probing into the creative process might have been nice, and if anyone’s extensive career has ever screamed for the Netflix limited series… but these are just minor offsets against the warmth and good spirits of the enterprise, with some nice interjections from Spielberg, Lucas et al to sweeten the pot.

The kind of doc that just kind of celebrates someone who deserves it without any real storytelling or insight or aesthetic ambitions. There's nothing really wrong with that, and I'd imagine there are people who aren't familiar with Williams that would have their minds blown that one guy did all these iconic scores, but if you're already onboard there's not much depth here. A pleasant watch but this kind of thing is all over these streaming services and they could be better than they are.

You're going to get weepy as you are reminded of all the great movies you've seen and the fantastic music in them.
