Agatha Christie, queen of the whodunit, this is yet another adaptation of her most recognizable story featuring her most recognizable character. It's a fun movie and I really felt like Branagh had a lot of love to put into it, the direction and his performance as Poirot are pretty solid. For all the enjoyment that can be found here, there's no ah-ha moment for the audience when the mystery ends with a hilariously contrived and simply unrealistic reveal at the end. Good, but not great.

The story was not as compelling as I'm sure the writer thought it would be. Too many talking heads also. The eccentric detective with the ridiculous mustache was not always entertaining. The deductions are spoon fed in a way that destroys much of the intrigue. It starts out good but the fun fizzles out by the ending.

The twist ending is so unique, inspired & devastating to the hero, it's easy to see why this is considered one of the greatest mystery tales of all time. And although Branagh makes sure to squeeze all the drama from the conclusion & makes the opening scenes introducing all the players (& the popular actors playing them) a great deal of fun, the middle grinds to a halt. Perhaps this many interrogations & reams of hard-to-remember background details on each suspect is best digested in book form.

The greatest difference with the book is you can not really guess who the killer is in the movie, you are kept more in the dark with fewer details until the final reveal so that the end can have a greater impact. I guess it works better for a movie audience but ultimately you can't help feeling cheated. Gotta say, I enjoyed the Branagh brand of detective work tho.

I think it was fine, just like the Lumet one. The Lumet one had better direction but this was entertaining enough. It's a good little murder mystery, a fun ride, but then after it's over there's really no reason to watch it again. Decent performances all around, nothing really stands out. But ultimately it's just one of those movies I give a 70 because it entertained to the point that I wasn't really bored, nor was I fully invested.

a murder is revealed to be a healing balm, a catalyst for masks to fall and humanity to emerge, and so poirot, nursing his own fractured soul, must re-examine his rigid moral code. it's a film about moral simplicity--how it's our nature to desire it, and the world's to deny it--so it's fitting that hidden within its light confection is a rich, conflicted centre. none of it would work without branagh's powerful performance: he manages to sell both absolute conviction and the dissolution thereof.

I love mysteries that reveal all the important information only after the investigator figures them out because they'd make no sense unless they were a surprise revelation about something that happened in a completely different murder case that's never brought up until half way through the mystery. Fucking classic.

Delivers in a way the Lumet one utterly fails at. Branagh is always a delight, and the rest of the cast works well together. No one is chewing on the scenery, which is perhaps why people are panning this. People want ACTING!!!1!!!1!! when nuance and subtlety are often a much more suitable fare.

I like old-school murder-mysteries, but there isn't much charm here, or anything exceptional or apart-setting (yes, I know I can't say that, but I did). Except for CGI, which detracts. And Poirot's mustache, but I prefer David Suchet's.

Branagh's penchant for fidelity served him well in Hamlet and Cinderella, but this story isn't a classic in the same sense and required a more unorthordox treatment to really captivate. He does nothing to build on previous interpretations and simply wastes a talented cast in a handsomely mounted film that's all dressed up with nowhere to go.The mystery contains zero intrigue and even less suspense, and Branagh's comical moustache makes this viewer wish he had the stones to play it as farce.

Branagh's re-enactment feels exactly like one. He spends a lot of work and CGI to recreate the look, but mostly fails to make it come alive; a lot of good actors are stuck ticking plot boxes in rather interchangeable mustaches and period dresses. The finale is effective, though.

Tries to be profound character-driven drama, silly comedy, cheesy melodrama and mystery thriller all at once. With embarassing results. And that's not just due to the terrible ADR. Or Kenneth Branaghs stupid accent. Or the way this is put together and directed in general. Or the score, which sounds like it's from some random database for royalty free music and hasn't been used before, only because most stuff like that is a lot better than this. Weak script. Worse film. KB seems like a douche.

Distastefully adapted. David Suchet is to date still the only good or even adequate Poirot. Kenneth Branagh is awful and full of himself here. Brannagh conflates Poirot with Sherlock Holmes, there are no subtleties here. You can't just go running and chasing and screaming at witnesses.

Murder on the Orient Express is an incredibly silly and melodramatic spin on the well known source material. I admire Kenneth Brannagh as both an actor and a director but here I feel his efforts either side of camera are incredibly over the top. The cast is almost too good for its own good as the performances never reach the heights of how good the cast looks on paper. Nobody in particular excelled or stood out. There is fun to be had but overall I had high expectations for what is very average.

Ah, is that all that Depp is worth now, after all those allegations-spending a movie as a dead body... Aside from that, I haven't read the novel, nor have I seen other adaptations, so my dislike towards the movie is not from a disappointment it did not live to a certain potential. However, I am a huge fan of the genres and the movie felt bland, boring and predicable. Kenneth Branagh felt obnoxious and full of himself and overall I didn't feel invested. Tons of feelings, all of disappointment.

If you watched Sherlock Holmes (2009), which is hard not to compare with, this one is less dramatic, less dark, less intense, less polished, and a bit less fluent. Do depending on your mood it can be better or worse. The strong point of the movie is that it's easy to watch, enjoyable, without being a stupid show movie. The weak point is that I won't watch it again or remember it much.

People calling this film ordinary should probably reassess how they feel about the text. Other people complaining about this being a useless remake ought to listen to me now: I have neither read nor seen any version of Murder on the Orient Express. I came into this with no expectations. Superior to its 1974 predecessor in many ways. Try not to be awestruck by the cinematography of the train going past the snow covered mountains. Michelle Pfeiffer as the matriarch and Kenneth Branagh's change of heart move you in spite of yourself. Great unexpected moments of drama such as when Colonel Arbuthnot's character tries to shoot Poirot. Don't believe the critics on this one. Yes, Poirot's moustache is absurd but you soon forget that moustache & get absorbed in the plot.

Disappointing. Great actors, great settings and set design in the train, but a misguided conclusion and a general lack of flow in the writing and editing make for an experience that is neither meaningful (which it wants to be) nor uproariously funny (which it could be). I was especially troubled by the logic behind Poirot's decision, which struck me as ignoring important realities about justice in the face of feelings--it doesn't play as merciful, but as resigned.

A cast that I was very excited to see work together, did so... adequately. That's not to say that I was disappointed, the performances just didn't jump off the screen at me, and that, to be honest, is the movie in a nutshell. It's totally fine. But it likely won't blow anybody away. The one exception I suppose is Josh Gad, who is better here than I have ever seen him. Branagh's direction is capable, with the odd gem sprinkled about. This is fun and will entertain, if only for a single viewing.

Decent Sunday afternoon fare for when you're half asleep, but a largely tepid and unremarkable adaption. The cast does their thing, and they're mostly good at it. Patrick Doyle's score for the last twenty minutes of the film is perfection and deserves a better movie (although it's so beautifully suited for the picture's needs that it makes you feel, just for a second, as if you are, in fact, watching a far greater film).

The only two things that really are worth the effort of making it through the whole film are the well-constructed story and the beautiful art-deco train. A butchered Agatha Christie lies somewhere in between the unconvincing time setting, cringy humour and unbelievably badly-written dialogue. The ensemble cast is fascinating on paper but none of them give any notable performances, and, even though the 1974 film is there to be used as a template for juggling all these characters with gravitas, somehow this important factor completely eludes Branagh, resulting in a haphazard, average crime flick despite the classic source material. That reveal tho!

Upon a second watch this played a little better for me, maybe due to much lowered expectations. It's entertaining enough to a point and often very good looking and stylishly shot. A great cast though few performances really stand out as anything special, but that wouldn't matter if the murder mystery was done well. It was hard to keep track of all of the characters and their respective screen times and backstories are rather thinly spread. After a slowish start, the film doesn't really get going until the murder and even then it's all a bit chaotic and confusing. Perfunctory low-key thriller at least has the draw of a spectacular cast, though unlike the 70s version, this collection of stars is given little to do, thanks to Branagh's overly fussy directorial style and performance; both are so hyper stylised they threaten to block everyone else out. If you already know how it ends, this overlong adaptation brings very little new to the table, though Pfeiffer's haunting rendition of the theme ('Never Forget') is worth sticking around to the end credits for.

At times it does slow to a crawl but thanks to the incredible performances from Branagh, Gad, Ridley and a smaller performance from Depp the film kept on the tracks (even if the fictional train did not). Haven't seen the original but I am quite happy with this one. Kenneth Branagh is great as director and as actor.

Absolutely beautiful cinematography, with Manu excellent acting performances as well (particularly Pfeiffer's). This film also understands the nature of grief and grey morality far better than the 1974 version (which is still excellent).

I think almost everything about this, taken individually, is not good, and yet I kind of love the whole thing.

A gorgeous vanity project that runs out of steam halfway through, but still a very beautiful and delicious ride. Branagh directs himself in the same overblown and overdone fashion as with Hamlet. Which is, in my opinion, something to cherish.

A faithful recreation of classic Hollywood style. It doesn't bother with any kind of novelty--save a few inspired camera shots which hearken back to Branagh's far more dynamic Hamlet adaptation--and it's basically the embodiment of safe movie remakes. The ensemble cast is disastrously wasted, but because it's in service of Branagh's charming and deliciously hammy performance (by and large the movie's single greatest asset), it's easily forgiven. Overall, it's a perfectly fine background movie.

A very rough start hurts the movie's chance, but by the time the murder is in full swing and the train is at a full stop, the movie pulls in the viewer. Story is fantastic including all the twist and clues thrown at the viewer. Everyone's acting is good, I expected better but maybe I just assumed people would be going for the Oscars with this movie. The shots are beautiful, although hurt by mediocre CGI

Far better than I expected from the reviews... The wonderful cast was probably underutilized and the movie dragged a bit in parts and may not have been the best retelling of the story, but it was decent.

Not a bright plot, understandably, but nice costumes, accents and overall picture.

Completely fine adaptation, though as someone who wasn't familiar with the story I was actually a bit disappointed when the truth was revealed.

Probably shouldn't have watched this so soon after reading the book. Fantastic murder mystery. A pretty poor adaptation. I enjoyed some of the characters, but others just seemed off. And they introduced an unnecessary amount of action into a Hercule Poirot story. Not a bad afternoon film to watch, but nothing I'm excited about.
