Jettisons everything that made the animated film fun (the songs, the dragon sidekick, humor in general) so as to make a more "respectful" movie that'll sell better in the all-important Chinese market. This version changes Mulan from a hardworking normal person who actually needs training into a superpowered Chosen One, undermining the All Girls Can Do This message they were obviously going for. These Disney live-action remakes need to pack up, go home, they're through.

Colourful and scenic, but messily structured. The story can't fail to inspire no matter what Disney does to it, but unaddressed imperialism (and happy military draft), a boring script, and weak effort (nearly) all around does what it can to diminish its effect. Still, I hope this Hua Mulan will excite a generation of English-speaking children who can't read subtitles yet: she's a great character.

Another Disney high-budget, low effort film. Film is like a bad cover of the original. The movie relies heavily on its audience's pre-existing knowledge of the original film, despite being different from the fun-loving, original animation. The message has changed from all girls can do what they set their mind into, into mulan is a nationalist chosen one who at heart respects tradition, family and honor. The Disney brand sells and people will pay, that's why they even really don't have to try.

Strips the spirit of the animated movie pretty much clean away, leaving little fun or humor or personality. Dunno about this Yifei Liu chick either; not a ton of screen presence. If I saw her delivering one line as Waitress #2 in something I’d never be like “there’s a star!” I’ll always to some extent enjoy medieval battle sequences with swords and spears and shit though; I’m a real sword whore!

Mulan delivers a different aesthetic from its animated counterpart that would have been enjoyable had it not been paired with a poor screenplay & script more cartoonish than the original. The theme of finding your identity in a world filled with misconception becomes one of asserting yourself in a world of hyperbolic sexism, making Mulan come across as a spoilt brat. Too much CGI, slow-mo & logistically flawed action; bad & ill-fitting attempts at comedy; and narration make it a chore to watch.

Wow, some really nice nationalist propaganda you've got there, disney. Besides that, the film isn't bad or anything, it's just... there. Some really beautiful shots, some cool stunts, some fairly decent performances, some quite shitty performances, a weak script, not really interesting camera work, bright colours, lots of okay-ish action sequences... idk, it's nothing special imo but it could've been worse, of course.

From, Disney Corporation, the studio that brought you [defending China's human rights atrocities], comes a [sad attempt to appeal to Chinese censors] of a classic adventure: [Who cares?]! Starring a diverse cast including: [Someone who thinks Hong Kong doesn't exist], [What is Tibet?], and [concentration camps of Uyghur Muslims]! With daring themes of [authoritarianism] and [genocide]! The CGI [Xi looks like Winnie the Pooh] will leave you breathless! See it today!

A lot better than expected and overall a great adaptation. The changes made to the film to make it acceptable for a live-action version is great. Lacks the great music of the original, but still very much enjoyable.

Kind of an extension of the problems that befuddled last year’s remake of The Lion King, although this isn’t as slavishly devoted to its predecessor. The issue being that every change feels totally superfluous and even detrimental when one considers how relatively streamlined the original is. That’s all besides the fact that this is boring, bloated, and surprisingly cheap-looking. Pretty much a total miss in every regard.

Beautiful to look at w/ some visually interesting action sequences that might impress more if they involved less CGI & camera tricks. It doesn't help that when one sees this much Asian talent in an action drama, one expects amazing fight scenes, as opposed to just good enough. Since it's meant for kids, it's also very predictable but adults should find it easy enough to sit through. The lead also plays sincere & conflicted well. I still want to know why only the bad guys could run up walls

An impossible story with a fair amount of pageantry and beauty. The costumes and sets were beautiful. The fighting was so over the top that it was impossible to enjoy. The saccharine-sweet story is classic Disney schmaltz. The plot is as overblown as the fighting, making it a movie that only a child and young girls could truly love. Insufferable at times. High production quality. Good music and sound. Worth watching, but far less than great.

As I've never seen the original Disney animation movie, I have no association or affection for the story. I've registered that there are a lot of strong opinions in negative direction for this live-action remake, but I felt it was fine. Entertaining, straight-forward and nice visuals. Emotionally a bit simplistic, but this flew by as the light piece of entertainment it was meant to be.

It's just too bad that for Disney the only "possible" wuxia is patriotism + family values. Lifeless action as usual, but at least there is some representative stuff for young girls.

Instantly became my new favorite live-action Disney film. There's just so much to adore here. This is a beautifully-shot film that focuses so hard on the themes of honor and acceptance, just like the original, but it feels much more mature, like it has grown up with the kids that saw the original cartoon way back in the day. Highly-recommended.

Visually it looks great. The colors, the scenes, the feel of it, it's all great. Mulan was less of a Mary Sue than I expected based on what I had read online, but I wasn't a big fan of her childhood scene of 'wow she's chased chimkens so she became an expert of an ancient force written in her blood'. It just doesn't add anything to the original animated version and in fact, many of the characters feel like cardboard cutouts to the original ones.

I was disappointed, having Mulan be a big childhood favorite of mine. The messages aren't as good as the original. I only really liked the friendship between Mulan and the witch.

This Live Action Remake takes the original Mulan and throws it into a dumpster. This Mulan don't need to learn anything now. The old original had warmth and charm, this one is far far of.

Sumptuous film almost matches the earlier animated effort; Caro has studied the Yimou playbook in terms of staging and design, but comes into her own during the robust battle sequences, with Liu's feisty and charismatic performance the perfect anchor. Making do without musical numbers or Murphy's memorable dragon sidekick does nothing to hinder this, but it is a shame that a near interminable coda is added, creating a drag just when a nimble exit was needed. Minor quibbles in all though!

Little bit different story then animated movies Mulan (1998) and Mulan-II The Final War (2004). But it is a good film. Story begins when Mulan is young and racing to catch hen and breaking the things and people are shouting on her. Mulan is a young woman living in China with her powerful father. Mulan wants nothing more than to replace him in the army as he is not physically strong enough to fight. To secure a place in this army, she pretends to be a man.

I very much enjoyed this movie. I don't really understand all the complaints. Maybe the magic was unnecessarily excessive. And the villains were a bit dumb. And it didn't stick to the animated movie very closely or include any songs. But it was a very good movie.

It is visually appealing and has some good action scenes but beyond that it falls short of creating the dynamic the animated film has. It doesn't have the heart, the courage or the core that the animated version attained. Its not a complete dumpster fire but I can seriously say I'm glad I didn't pay the premium price for this.

I really liked this movie. While I do enjoy the nostalgia fests of the previous Disney live action remakes, I also really appreciate taking this story and turning it into a more serious war / martial arts film, and I think it pulls it off really well. It's a shame Disney wasn't able to earn their box box office numbers I'm sure they would have gotten with this due to the pandemic, but I really enjoyed it, and I hope more people watch it, despite some disagreements with the actress IRL.

Absolutely terrible. Weak performances, trite script. Ridiculous decisions (why did Mulan need super powers? Why is there a villain witch that changes into a bird?). Ridiculously predictable. It does not do one thing better than the animated original. Soulless. Its supposed emancipatory message feels fake and unbelievable, in part due to the aforementioned ridiculous decisions, but also because of the stupid family values nationalist message that is repeated every 10 minutes. Fuck you Disney.

I went into this movie knowing it was a bit divisive, but wasn't expecting the lackluster film I watched. It's hard to put into words how I feel about this film. There are some unintentional laughable parts, the cgi isn't great, and the pacing is an absolute mess. Everything that makes the original charming, funny, and heartwarming is gone. I will say that some of the acting wasn't bad, though a lot of it was. At the end, I was left just wanting to watch the original. Definitely not worth $30.

Mulan's physiology is so powerful that she has to hide her chi to avoid being branded a witch, even though witches weren't a thing in China, and even when disguised as a boy. Sometimes the cameraman gets drunk. No one gets any character development, and only one very minor character has any personality.
