That old woman's laugh..Probably the most standardised Meyer film I've seen to date. I'm putting that down to the script not coming from his erect quill. He still sneaks some giant breasts in, but this is more of a moral examination spoken in era-contemporary language than anything else. Competent but runs slow and bland..or maybe tasteless, but not in a good way.

This is one of Meyer's better films, if not among his very best. Besides Lancaster, who gets probably his most substantial good guy role here, a few Meyer regulars pop up including Fran Bolger as a local preacher who sides with Hopper, Princess Livingston as the owner of a crazy, rural whorehouse, Mickey Knox and Lorna Maitland as Livingston's deaf, mute daughter. The film is heavy on plot and dynamic Meyer-style action and fairly low on gigantic breasts waggling at the camera.

As much as I hated the characters' piercing, mocking laughter, I have to admit that Russ Meyer gave this film just enough of an identity for me not to actively dislike it.

Southern fried family melodrama set during the Great Depression. It's got a drunken pastor, a mute prostitute with a toothless madam, an ex-con drifter, domestic violence, steamy adultery, a lynch mob and a big dispute over ownership of a farm. It stars some gorgeous ladies and has some surprisingly solid acting. It's kinda like a Tennessee Williams play but with more rape and huge boobs.

It's quirky but still delectable piece of Americana, with great characters. Rough, lecherous and a bit goofy but not gratuitous or obnoxious. Remains my favorite Russ Meyer movie, the one where his vision comes through the clearest, the most succinct.
