Like an Oprah's Book Club version of a Faulkner novel, but less of an insult than that probably sounds.

A uneven mix of really good and boring stretches. Some powerful performances contrasts sharply with the slog through the first half. Carey Mulligan and Garrett Hedlund were charismatic. Jason Mitchell was also a stand out. All of the supporting cast was outstanding. There was plenty of hardship and the heinous racist violence was painful to watch, but amist the destitution there are superb stories of human struggle that sticks with you.

It doesn't matter what color you are. Spend enough time down in the mud, and everyone turns......muddy. Wait. What did you think I was going to say? Strong message, amazing performances, and "happy" ending that serves as a fitting middle finger pointed directly at anyone and everyone who thinks these kind of stories ever truly have happy endings.

Strong setup and good performances, and as long as it keeps its focus on the two families it's often brilliant. At 2 hours plus, though, there was plenty of time to just pull back the camera a tiny bit to capture more of the world outside, but the whole thing is both written and filmed in extreme close-ups (almost as if Netflix expect people to watch it on phones), which somewhat lessens the impact of what could have been a great movie.

starts out kind of crappy and unfocused, but finds its bearings and gets real good toward the middle, but then the ending kind of sucks

It's a very strong film, with its only downfall being a plot that is not exactly original. I loved the multi-narrator element and made the story flow in a unique way. The production of the film is great as are the performances, though (perhaps through overhype) I didn't find Mary J Blige's performance mindblowing. It's easily the best Netflix film I've come across and deserving of all the praise it's receiving.

Likeable from moment to moment on an acting and cinematography basis (down-south mud-and-sunshine tones), but the thoughts on dirt and death, family and status are never finalized. The narrative settles on a very simple melodramatic episode that washes away the time spent. An epic it ain't.

Every scene between Jamie and Ronzelle is fantastic. Other than those scenes, the movie feels a little after-school-special and tries to do a little too much.

There's a billion different plot threads here over a years-long time span but the potent mixture of blood (see Jamie and Ronsel's harrowing experiences abroad and at home), sweat (see the farm work scenes throughout), tears (see Laura's breakdown), and mud (see the gritty landscapes) adeptly sticks them all together to form a powerful meditation (literally-see the multi-perspective narration throughout) on the poverty and racism of rural 40s Mississippi. Strongly acted, shot, and directed.

Ambitious, insightful, nuanced take on race relations circa 1960s (utilising a pragmatic appeal to common humanity) with several narrators giving a thoughtful overview from all corners - it might have been interesting (though necessarily confronting) to give Banks a voice from the 'wrong' side. Arguably the ensemble of the year with a cast studded with first rate performances, though Morgan and Blige steal the show; Rees weaves her disparate characters together masterfully.

Punishing, raw and intense, but nuanced. Mudbound is one very well made movie that never lets go, with a fully realized story in a lived-in world and six interesting characters played by a great cast.

This is one of those films where it's very obvious that it's based on a book - it felt a lot like one, especially with the narration. It was a decent film, but did tend to be very heavy-handed and saccharine. I liked the relatively simple story idea overall though, and it was well-performed. It doesn't bring a whole lot new to the table, but it's a nicely-crafted movie that I'm sure most people could enjoy.

It's heart is in the right place, but please, cut down on that straight ahead voice over narration.

With absolutely stunning photography and precise editing, Mudbound is a feast for the eyes. The multiple narrators are beautifully woven together to create a fascinating portrait of race and class in the Jim Crow south. The second half of the film struggles in a way a miniseries would have thrived in its abundant plot points. In the end, the film looks too much like Legends of the Fall than the something really special the first act sets up.

I was slightly underwhelmed the first time I watched this. It was upon unexpected second viewing that I really ended up liking it a whole lot. I never read the book, but I am sure it's an amazing read. The is all really good, considering it's a cast of people who aren't usually in a lot of movies. That isn't to say I didn't like them. I was quite impressed with them! I loved the story of the young men from different backgrounds going to war and then coming together after it's over. Great movie.

Outstanding performances from the entire cast, and there's a lot of beautiful cinematography. However, the brutality of the story is very hard to watch. I know that's the point, but it makes Mudbound an "Excellent but too harrowing" type of film for me.

Viewed December 19, 2017. It's easy to admire the novelistic scope of the film's storytelling, which takes place across years and takes us into the heads of multiple main characters (With the setting, subject matter and thematic focus on familial dynamic, the echoes of Faulkner are unavoidable). But eventually this sprawl seems to merely conceal the film's dispiriting lack of ideas, bafflingly thin characterization and mediocre filmmaking.

A story about two families in Mississippi during and after World War II, one black and one white, and their viewpoints on a world divided by racism. Masterfully shot and very well acted. The interactions between the various members of both families are often tense as well as thoughtful. An important movie!

Mudbound is a wonderful movie and, if you have Netflix, you need to watch it. It took a while, but the streaming service has finally started distributing quality movies and not just television shows. Mudbound immediately jumps either to the top or near the top of the pile. It has strong characters, engaging themes that are both interesting and topical, fantastic acting, and tells an engaging story. If it has a weakness, it's that it's a little slow in its first half. It is great.

Set in post-WWII Mississippi, this pretty sprawling story is essentially about two men (Garrett Hedlund and Jason Mitchell) who come back from the war and become friends despite their racial differences. Tragedy occurs when an explosive secret is revealed. It's an adaptation of a novel that feels like it does justice to it's scope.

A real heartbreaker. The number of dramatic elements at play throughout this story, in the hands of lesser filmmakers, could border on maudlin, but this film is genuinely affecting.

It took me some time before I hit play... Glad I did. Mulligan and the cast in general do a great job. Love how the individual stories are being told without breaking the movie up in separate themes or storylines (which is an easy fail). *Very good

Well-told story of friendship between young white and black folks after WWII as they struggle with memories of war and an America devastated by hate and racism. A bit heavy-handed -- KKK segment --, but the brilliant performances hold this melodrama together. Also, a good part of it is about love after trauma: Jamie is in love with her sister in law, eventually having sex with her and sharing a secret - he killed dad - and Ronsel goes back to Germany to reunite with old girlfriend and son.

at its best it's less a screed about america's legacy of slavery than an impassioned demonstration of common humanity between the socially disparate, but despite some texture and sensitivity it can't transcend the prestige-pic tag. the attempt to present multiple perspectives is ambitious but neither successful nor cinematic, not burying inside the characters so much as superficially evoking the sprawl of its source; in reality, most of these beats and characterisations remain boringly broad.

Overall a compelling experience, mainly due to solid performances. The film cleverly depicts the contrast in attitude towards black people between US and European countries. It suffers from slight pacing issues and many scenes could have been cut entirely without diminishing the impact of the story.

It's a solid historical drama. I don't think it's as grandiose as it thinks it is tho (the whole 2 generations of 2 families doesn't feel as fleshed out as they could've been). I don't usually talk oscars here, but I noticed this got nominated for best cinematography and I'm not really sure why?

MUDBOUND is a tasteful, well-acted, and long-overdue variation on the period prestige drama, even if it strains in its effort to announce itself as an Important Film. The movie gets carried away on the wave of its own melodrama, turning from solemn to trite to sublime, usually in the length of one reel. The film's focus sharpens in its second half--a compelling portrait of verboten interracial friendship--but even this comes at the expense of other nuanced, interesting relationships.

dış sese fazla bağlı kalması filmin anlatı gücünü zedeliyor çünkü sinematografik olarak yakalanan bir mod olsa dahi bunun ötesinde de bir şey anlatmak istiyor da anlatamıyormuş hissi veriyor. henüz hikayenin başında olacakların açık edilmesi, filmin meseleyi sömürücü bir açıdan alma derdi olmadığını göstermesi ve buna rağmen seyir zevki sunabilmesiyle değerli. başarılı performanslar ve yapım tasarımı, standart anlatı.
