Mrs. Parkington

1944
Romance, Drama
2h 4m
In this family saga, Mrs. Parkington recounts the story of her life, beginning as a hotel maid in frontier Nevada where she is swept off her feet by mine owner and financier Augustus Parkington. He moves them to New York, tries to remake her into a society woman, and establishes their home among the wealthiest of New York's high society. Family and social life is not always peaceful, however, and she guides us, in flashbacks, through the rises and falls of the Parkington family fortunes. (imdb)

Feels like the type of movie that is pure Oscar bait, but it lacks interesting characters. And lacks a interesting story for these uninteresting characters. They did the long biographical history of a rich family, with their ups and downs, which so many Oscar movies have been about, except here you don't know if one should care one way or the other. Good production values and some key scenes where Walter Pidgeon throws his ego around and Greer Garson standing up to the brute.

A biographical drama of spanning three generations. While the drama is appealing and both Pidgeon and Garson shine, the pace of the story is slow in the middle years.

Wow, Garson is pretty poor in her old age scenes (even if the senior make-up is pretty good). In the flashbacks, however, the actress shines and her chemistry sparkling with Pidgeon. It is Moorehead, however, who is best in show here, as well as the streamlined direction of Garnett. Still, the "present day" scenes feel quite forced and really waste talent (Dan Duryea and Gladys Cooper aren't given much to do).
