Mr. Vampire II

I can't imagine anyone actually thinking the first one was scary, but this one was even less scary. But the reason for watching the Mr. Vampire series is for slapstick, laughs and fighting, and while it's definitely a step down, it's still a solidly entertaining installment.

Much sillier than the first Mr. Vampire movie, with a whole E.T. ripoff subplot for kids. I got excited after Yuen Biao appeared on-screen alongside forever-Taoist-priest Ching-Ying Lam, but there's very little kung-fu action. It is pretty straight-forward slapstick comedy. For some reason I found the very long gag with retardant gas hilarious. Decent HK vampire comedy, but don't expect a great movie like the original.

I'm not sure there's all that much of a plot here, but several of the set pieces are quite good: the slow-motion fight, the escape hopping over cars action, and even the vampire kid's day out montage. It feels a little dumbed-down from the first, which is kind of a funny thing to say about a movie series with hopping vampires anyway.

For me, the worst in the series. Not just for the excessive animal abuse, but that was part of it. The comedy wasn't as funny, and the action was missable. The Jiangchi: Extraterrestrial premise is funny as hell, but it doesn't quite land here.
