Mr. Malcolm's List

Austenian-like regency romance that isn't raunchy but delivers that Bridgertonian feel of diverse casting. Aside from novelty period casting, not extremely impactful. Woman tries to essentially catfish a lord and "liar revealed" plot ensues. But if you like aforementioned IP's, you'll like this. I liked it just fine even if it was derived.

"Mr. Malcolm's List" is a beautifully designed and crafted romantic comedy that will delight fans of Jane Austen's novels and "Bridgerton." While it has some flaws, it's a joyous escape into a world of wealth and grandeur, with pitch-perfect performances and a pitch-perfect screenplay.

Delightful, very much *my shit*. Quite great cast, too! I hope we get more films like this (I think it exists because Bridgerton, which is great). Beyond the romance, I appreciated the complicated friendship between Selina and Julia. And also I love Cassie, he's my fave!

I'm not too familiar with the book, so I don't know how close to the source material it is, but I didn't really find that much in this film that elevated it beyond a fairly cookie cutter period piece. Most of the plot points are telegraphed and the central conflict doesn't even feel like that much of a conflict. The acting and set design are top notch and they do what they can with the material, but there are moments when the film is pretty unremarkable for me.

Very enjoyable modern period drama, with lots of beautiful locations, colourful costumes and caricature characters. The script was witty and charming and everything worked out in the predictable way you would expect of a film of this genre.
