Eddie Murphy's surprising come-back in a predictable tearjerker. My opinion here : http://opinion-as-a-moviefreak.blogspot.be/2016/12/mr-church-2016.html [Full review]

An overly familiar and dated drama with Murphy doing his best in a thoroughly underwritten role. Beresford's colourless direction also doesn't help. A lazy effort all round.

Mr. Church is a simple film that boasts decent performances, good-natured characters and wholesome drama. Unfortunately its lack of complexity is its downfall. Individual scenes have tension but film overall lacks it, thus I was constantly waiting for a penny that never dropped. The film is watchable, but far too safe to be interesting, and bizarrely too saccharine without being resonant.

I think critics got this one wrong. Beautiful movie about family and following your passions. Kudos Eddie Murphy on a quietly powerful and moving performance.

Thats a graceful story about normal people when they try to act good with all they got. And As a movie Acting, cinematography, usage of the light, pacing, screen play all of 'em was simple, efficient, solid and neat. I like it.

"Cooking for Miss Daisy", that's how I felt about it right from the start without knowing the director Bruce Beresford actually did direct Driving Miss Daisy (1989)! That just made too much sense. I just wanted to see were Eddie Murphy was at these days. And it was nice to see him not make a fool of himself. It's a toned down piece of acting. Doesn't become as sentimental as it aims for, but it's a nice little story of friendship and life circles without it becoming a life chaging experience.

the summary says it all. this is a pure drama in all it's heartwarming goodness and heartstring tugging. apparently, samuel l. jackson was originally attached for mr. church, and i'm sure glad they got eddie murphy he does an excellent job, makes me hope he lands some more serious roles. as a whole, don't go into this movie expecting more than decent.

A little slow but this was a pleasant watch! The acting was spot on. If you are in a mood for a good drama flick, then look no further.

Some good parts interspersed with some inscrutable WTF parts.
