Mac is charming and there is actually an honest attempt at portraying change in a person in this film. It gets bogged down by goofy jokes and side stories but it is close to being a good movie.

At least it was about baseball... As a baseball fan, that's about the most I can say.

I love baseball movies, even the terrible ones, and I hated this. What does that tell you?

Formulaic and sitcom-level script ultimately hurts an amiable but unmemorable effort – probably more notable now as a rare leading role for Mac, well and truly holding his own as a leading man. A shame that after a sharp and funny “training montage” first act, the film becomes sluggish and self-serious; as a very definite anti-student of the game, the baseball scenes themselves seemed to lack a power and energy that could have helped generate higher stakes. Not painful and sorta enjoyable but…

I like Bernie Mac in the role but everything is very predictable. It doesn't have anything about it which elevates the stale script.

No real jokes, no real pathos, and Mac's Stan Ross is as unlikable as possible for as long as possible. It's not a romance, it's barely a comedy and it's not a strong drama - so who is this movie *for*?

Mr. 3000 is fun, but it's no grand slam, perfect game, or other rare feats in baseball that would signify it being spectacular. It is fun, simple as that. It is held back a lot by some of its dramatic events, and either should have given them the necessary time or cut them completely. If anything, it's another comedian-turned-dramatic-actor movie that will help you see Bernie Mac in a brighter light.

A decent premise that is put in the most formulaic story possible. It's a bummer really because I like Bernie Mac and this was a potentially good vehicle for him. It is watchable, but it's really hard to make a movie this by the numbers unwatchable. That's why these plots get redone over and over again. People will watch them (sometimes paying money), shrug their shoulders and move on with their lives. Only worth watching if it's on TV.

"It's a team sport, but the story belongs to the individual, which gives the otherwise comfortable corniness of Mr. 3000 its meta-celebrity subtext." - Eric Henderson

Didn't hate it. Still pretty much nothing redeemable about it.

While it surely collects every sports movie cliche available and is very predictable every step of the way, some decent acting performances and sold directing keep it from becoming totally worthless.

Best movie I never saw on a plane (serves that complaining bastard right!) When I got around to actually seeing it, it was that much sweeter.

Great movie with a great story line. It had Bernie Mac. He stars as a retired baseball player that wants to go one more season to make the Hall of Fame.

Is this a remake of that movie with Tom Selleck and his fabulous 'stache? Bernie Mack is funny, but his 'stach simply can't carry the day.

It's a Bernie Mac movie with baseball costarring. It's really not all that bad of a movie, in fact I kind of enjoyed it. But to call it a baseball movie would set you up for disappointment. Bernie Mac plays Bernie Mac, a smart alec that by the end of the movie/episode always learns his lesson. At least it had Paul Sorvino.

Bernie Mac is a believable arrogant superstar, and the baseball scenes capture the game perfectly. The realism of the setup takes a bit hit when ESPN's reporter assigned to the story "coincidentally" has a romantic history with her subject.
