To say this movie isn't for everyone is an understatement (just look at the other reviews). It's musically bold, stylistically in-your-face, shamelessly romantic, and unapologetically excessive. If you meet the movie on its own terms and embrace its hyperstylized reality (which I did), it's exhilarating. If you don't, it's torture. Either way, it's an experience you won't soon forget.

Gawdy, irritating mess. McGregor is charming as usual, Kidman is alright (but nowhere near sexy enough as the movie assumes she is), and Leguizamo made me want to claw my eyes (and ears) out. The story is maudlin and uninteresting. Songs are ok, I guess, but in every case I prefer the originals. To be fair, I don't care for musicals in general, but still this movie could have been a lot less painful for me than it was.

Absolutely brilliant and I can assure you this is strong praise, especially coming from myself as I usually detest romantic movies. I had put off seeing this film for quite a long time due to that very reason but upon finally viewing it I must say I found it enthralling. The visuals and script mesh perfectly to illustrate the story is told from the memory of Christian (McGregor). With such a convention in mind all the liberties taken with the storytelling fit together perfectly.

I loathe musicals, I dislike post-modernism, and while we're at it, I'm not sure Nicole Kidman was the best choice for the female lead. As you've probably already gathered, it's a giant mystery to me, why I think this movie is such a fabulous triumph of playful movie making. Maybe because it's breathtaking, enthralling, beautiful, tragic, and funny as hell, I don't know. Now fuck off. I'm feeling... fragile. Chhama chhama!!

Being a ten-year-old boy, I probably wasn't the target demographic for this movie when it was released, but still for some reason, I always thought the girls from the "Lady Marmalade" music video were the stars of this movie. So it was weird when instead of Christina Aguilera or Lil' Kim, a random Obi-Wan Kenobi started singing with John Leguizamo, running around on his knees, like Gary Oldman in "Tiptoes"(2003). With all that, while not being a big fan of musicals, this was entertaining enough.

It's easy2 see what teenagers saw in this: 1. It's slicker than an oil spill 2. Frenzied edits give the illusion of explosive dance sequences rather than, u know, actually letting the actual dancers do it (god knows they must have just loved their hard work chopped up in2 a billion cuts)3. It takes the easy (i.e. "cool") way out by using instantly recognizable pop/rock tracks 2 pander2 their coddled tastes rather than, u know, creating NEW music. Now, what were the critics' excuses 4 liking it?

"Moulin Rouge" is a one of a kind vibrant film. A musical one at that. Don't stick your nose up at that though. Baz Luhrmann's visionary directing style intertwined everything that is great here. Overall crowd pleasers don't come as fun, well made and filled with more emotion than this.

A brash, pushy work that is so piss-ass drunk on its own exhuberance it ends up choking on its own vomit. And like a drunkard, every element - tone, pacing, editing, acting, composition - seems to swing bipolar between violent, vulgar Tourette's and pulpy gushy romance. It does, admittedly, have one of my favorite musical sequences: Jim Broadbent singing Like A Virgin with an All-Male Mel Brooks-ish chorus line.

This is a bright, shinily-wrapped piece of crap. Over-produced, over-acted, over-hyped nonsense of the worst variety. It is intensely boring and long and has some sort of a plot apparently, sandwiched in between mediocre Elton John songs redone in a manner to make middle-aged housewives think it is apparently a brilliant movie.

I can understand how this could be celebrated for its absolute commitment to stylistic exuberance & wild excess but I feel only cynicism under its spastically creative vomit covered surface. Appreciating this as some kind of art/fashion statement would therefore require a level of abstraction I'm personally just unable to grant this cinematic assault. If only we could kidnap Luhrmann & throw him into the teleporter from The Fly with John Waters. The result could be the hero we all deserve.

It is visionary, bold, touching, and funny. To weave the voice of modern music within the cloth of the most legendary den of pleasure in Europe is genius. This movie explodes with emotion from the opening moment to the last note. It is a treasure.

A wild musical that's been 'thrown together' perfectly! Visually, a blend of multiple filming styles and thematic stage presentations with spell-binding cinematography. Sonically, the inclusion of dozens of musical genres (with well-performed numbers), combined with convincing and emotional performances from the leads, makes for one of the best early 21st century romantic films. Occasionally over-the-top and strange in scenes that aspire to be Shakespearean, but endlessly endearing and fun.

While the first act may be an assault on the senses, it's almost like a test for the audience to stick through it -- make an effort to care. I'm finding this similar theme throughout Luhrmann's filmography. If you can dig the modern music and the awkward injections of camp, Moulin Rouge will delight and, possibly, touch you by the end. Lurhmann's eye is often hyperactive, but he also knows when to slow down, focus on character, and let the audience breathe. This is how the film is successful.

I thought this was bullshit. I may be biased because I didn't see it for a long time and most every female my age flipped shit over how awesome they thought this was. When I saw it I was not just underwhelmed, but kind of disgusted at how it was simply a conventional romcom set to shitty sing-a-longs. This is also another example of how shallow women are. They are totally taken aback by McGregor's character because he can sing even though he wants to marry a prostitute. Like I said, bullshit.

Excessive, overdone and over-the-top, "Moulin Rouge!" nevertheless packs "spectacular!" musical numbers, Luhrmann's totally unique visual signature and plenty of delicious performances, courtesy of Kidman, McGregor and Broadbent. Although predictably plotted and superficial, it dazzles with its colorful visuals and delights with its choice of songs. The pace drags in the middle, but the beginning and finale are strong and the final result is an exuberant and exhilarating (if shallow) ravishment.

Baz Luhrmann's razzle-dazzle reconstruction of Gay Paree on Australian sound stages and inside computers. Nothing, no matter how overdesigned, overdressed, and overdecorated, is held onto for an adequate appraisal. Everything is handled as a hot potato. From how much people spoke about this back in the day, I was expecting more. The first 15-30 minutes are hard to get through with all of the flashes and screams and cartoon noises. I thought I was watching some parody of the movie at first. I get the idea behind it was to deconstruct this and that and make La Bohème new and bombastic. It just wasn't my cup of tea in the song choice, the singing voices, the over use of comedic clownery, and so on. It did look pretty, but to me it was not enough

An attempt to rekindle the magic of ROMEO + JULIET, which presumably accounts for the dubious decision to kill off the heroine. Luhrmann tries as hard as he can to raise low art to the transplendent heights: one can only respect the balls it takes to gamble so much of other people’s money on pure kitsch of a kind that is always bound to repulse a sizeable proportion of the audience. For this viewer, the frenetic editing wasn’t too irritating and the numbers worked: “Like a Virgin” was hilarious.

This is a very risky film that works very well. It's part comedy, part musical, part tragedy, and those pieces, which shouldn't really go together, fit quite well here. Kidman and McGregor have excellent chemistry, the cinematography is great, and it's all relatively simple but very charming. Moulin Rouge! is an ill-fated love story with a self-referential writer protagonist told via a Jukebox musical. Conceptionally intriguing but in reality a loud, heavily-edited, garish tragedy. This film was made in the editing room, with slow-mo, rollbacks, replays and a litany of other tricks that Luhrmann employs to make the style outweigh the substance. Half the songs are rendered forgettable by orchestral punctuation. Broadbent reciting 'Like a Virgin' as dialogue was pretty amusing though.

A barrage of colours and sounds distracts from but also sets apart the age-old tale of star-crossed lovers. Some moments rise above the mess, others are lost to it, but one way or another it is always its own, singular film.

Colourful and visually spectacular. A kind of niche song and dance film i my opinion.
