Detective mysteries of this sort are an obsession of mine, so I'd probably like this no matter how good or bad it is. The truth is, though, that while Lionel might be a unique lead in a story of this type, "Motherless Brooklyn" is hard-boiled to the core, it checks all the boxes without feeling overly cliched. If you're a fan of noir, or detectives, you should give it a shot. I got my fingers crossed for a sequel, but judging by Lethem, and the negative profit, I doubt it'll ever happen.

A voice-over by Norton goes a long way, and his second directorial effort is a nice little noir pastiche with a pretty great supporting cast (Mbatha-Raw, Dafoe, Baldwin). However, the protagonist's condition, which I certainly did not find amusing, adds nothing interesting (in fact, his incessant outbursts almost sort of ruined the movie for me), and, while completely decent, Norton's performance was a good deal less impressive than his usual brilliance.

Admittedly an uneven (and overlong) effort, but what works here works so well that it still becomes a sort of fascinating masterpiece; Norton pulling triple duty and directing a cast of Wes Anderson off-cuts is a great hook, and the film has atmosphere ala CHINATOWN to burn, and some terrific performances (seeing Willis in a sterling return to form was worth the price of admission). Goes off on too many tangents (jazz club) which work well in isolation, but kill story momentum from time to time.

Ed Norton is multitalented as the writer, director, and lead actor. This noir gumshoe story was interesting, twisted, engaging and very entertaining. I quite liked Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Ed Norton in this. It sports a tremendous cast of characters. All of the acting performances were very good. Excellent music and video production. It has lots of intrigue and mystery. Well worth watching.

it shows how far the jazz soundtrack could carry a noir. feels like bunch of over enthusiastic film students wanted to make a noir but realized in editing that it wouldn't work, so decided to treat it as a light comedy. also I guess norton is a better director & screenwriter when there's actual director and screenwriter whom he bugs while shooting the film.

Based off a1999 novel, the issues of discrimination and increasing urbanisation seem equally relevant in 1957, 1999 and today; which is an unfortunate blow to social progress. The film is a mixed bag with decent to good acting (though at times a little prone to over-acting). The plot is interesting, though there are issues with the pacing whereby the film should have lost at least 20 minutes. At times a little predictable, at others the plot is undermined by forgettable characters. It's alright.

Not only a great period piece crime thriller, but added the element of the main character having Tourette's. Master class in acting and filmmaking!

Nothing really works. In fact, every aspect of this movie is a little too dull or a little annoying.

The biggest issue with this movie is the script. This one runs wayyy too long and it grows horribly boring in between some rather interesting scenes. The cast is great, but even they cannot save this writing. A cool thing with the main character having Tourettes, but sometimes it felt a bit awkward, maybe like... are you sure you're doing it right? On another note, Alec Baldwin radiates authority and Willem Dafoe does the same with controlled, collected insanity. Why so long though.

Good detective movie with a beautiful soundtrack and masterful actors. Really underrated in my opinion. Black/White story of a father and an unwanted daughter.

The cast is great, the story is good, the execution is adequate. It is overlong and indulgent, with some pieces just not fitting properly. The end didn't satisfy, but it did feel realistic.

Music is good and some noir-style scenery too, otherwise feels a rather dull movie. Shallow even. What's with twitching character again, Ed? One of those rare movies I couldn't watch in one take and honestly I just don't feel to analyze the movie in depth because nothing seemed to work perfectly even though everything was executed on a good level.

Nobody asked for such an arrogant expository detective story with some baffingly bad directorial choices -- the political, racial overtones involving inequality and the NY mogul that is destroying "slums" to build "progress" through bridges and real estate chic shit actually go nowhere --, but I kinda liked it, though: Norton's Primal Fear performance is ridiculously funny and sometimes it's nice just to lay back and relax watching an actor-driven story. Bloated as hell, but that's ok.

All right ingredients for noir but instead Tourette's was the focus, which is a shame. A long walk from A to B makes an easy watching but do not expect too much plotwise. The cast is solid.

Can't get past the feeling that this is all about Norton giving himself a chance to play another broken character. The story is interesting enough, its heart in the right place, and intertwining the political and the personal. Ultimately, it's a bracing critique of a male-dominated world, its women saintly, the only ones who care about political justice in any meaningful way. The jazz score (and Thom Yorke) is pretty great.

Edward Norton'un yönetmenliğini ve başrolünde oynadığı film. Patronunun ölmesi sonucu, davasını araştıran 1 hafiye, Brooklyn siyahi ailelelerin evlerinden atılmasını keşfediyor. Görüntü yönetmenliğine bayıldım. Oyuncular doğaçlama olmayı seçmiş. Filmin sonunda, aile sırlarını öğreniyoruz. Belediye başkanının foyası da ortaya çıkıyor. Her ailede muzır bir kardeş vardır.

Good cast and I like the noir atmosphere. Felt like Chinatown NYC. Missing a femme fatale. The music was great. The Tourette's didn't annoy me as much as I'd feared. Fav scenes: Alec Baldwin's long dialogues about empire building.

While at times impressive thanks to a fully immersed Edward Norton playing triple duty it often trails off for long periods of time without coherency. It fell flat at times when it mattered most and aside from Norton never really took advantage of all the potential. What's good is good. The atmosphere throughout was tense and recreated well but it doesn't seem to lead to anything with any ounce of gratification for the long run time and wide array of characters introduced.

The idea of a private detective with Tourette's Syndrome sounds like it would lead to some very interesting and possibly amusing scenarios, and it is front and center in Ed Norton's performance, but it isn't explored in any depth. What we're left with is a nice looking period gumshoe drama with a double helping of government corruption a la Chinatown, but the pacing is way off. It's not a terrible movie, but it's kind of generic and would benefit greatly from being about 45 minutes shorter.

I think this movie suffered from inauthenticity. Sure, the bigwig politicians seem right, but everything else felt anachronistic to the time period. I was waiting for a smart phone to pop out somewhere. It was also unnecessarily loooooooooong.
