Possibly a romantic comedy of the highest order. I have yet to see another movie tackle love on such an honest way whilst also being outrageously hilarious. The pacing is perfect, I have to give credit to the filmmakers but also the cast for doing everything in such a smooth manner. Performances are phenomenal across the board, but I was particularly surprised and content with Olympia Dukakis’ turn as Rose and her arc. Great music, laughs, romance, winter setting and a truly exception script.

This movie is what all the best romantic comedies aspire to be -- equal parts romance AND comedy, with an honestly-earned touching moment or two thrown in just for good measure. Delight, from beginning to end.

Usually not a fan of romantic movies but this one worked for me. It's starts out a bit slow but once Nic Cage showed up I really got into it. Olympia Dukakis was also great and I was impressed by how good Cher was. It's funny and charming and definitely worth the watch.

An above average romantic comedy if for no other reason than the characters actually TALK to each other about their problems, something that is sadly missing from many rom-coms today. The film also lacks the standard plot contrivances that exist only to keep the leads apart. Yes, its predictable and falls into many other tropes of the genre (Cher needing a 'makeover' is particularly ridiculous) but, overall, its an enjoyable film.

Film au parfum des années 80. Cher est formidable, tous les acteurs font un remarquable travail (en particulier les parents), sauf Nicolas Cage qui n'est jamais crédible. Balade nocturne al dente plaisante, à défaut d'innover quoi que ce soit.

A decent-enough romantic comedy that really requires you to buy into "love at first sight" between two very different people. I did enjoy the accents and the over-the-top ... well, "mooning" ... over everything, but I didn't feel enough of a connection with most of the characters.

The production is really capable of creating a comfortable environment specially in the house of the main character. As much as the characters and the plot are exaggerated and unrealistic, it's all an affectionate cultural homage, which makes everything pleasing.

Cher turns in a very solid performance & Cage is in good form, plus the supporting cast all give great performances of their own. However, even though it does get a bit more interesting as it goes along, the two lead characters are pretty unlikeable people & their romance isn't all that easy to buy into. On top of that, there's a bit too much time devoted to side characters & scenes that, while entertaining, don't need to exist. It has its moments, but all-in-all it's nothing too special.

Viewed September 19, 2016. I'm a bit bummed to say that this did nothing for me. I found it a bit grating, and too broad to offer any real insight into the workings of the Italian American community it so lovingly portrays (It's basically a movie based on the opening line of "That's Amore). Ah, well, it was definitely nice to see one of Nicolas Cage's first "what the hell is this guy doing in Hollywood" performances; he's a weird, untethered cartoon of a man, brimming with virile energy.

A good romantic comedy, but a better film about overall crazy but amazing families. Some great concepts of love and life are introduced and played around with, and Olympia Dukakis is simply wonderful. Overall, the film's biggest downfall is that, for a romantic comedy, it just isn't funny enough.

Enjoyed this like I enjoy a bowl of ice cream. It's extremely sweet and enjoyable as it goes down. It even has some good substance to it. Loved the Dukakis character, and appreciated the wisdom her character injected into the film. It gave the whole story a grounding that is sorely lacking in most rom-coms. The characteristic Italian flourishes were a bit much after a few minutes, but the film has such a great heart that it's hard not to appreciate it.

First viewing. Funny and moving in equal measure. A basically perfect script brought to life by a basically perfect cast. Cher is magnetic, Cage marries farce and fervor expertly—reflecting the narrative's operatic focus—and Dukakis and Gardenia steal the show. This is packed to the gills with memorable scenes quotable to high heavens, with potent imagery laced throughout: The moon's allure and the struggle between pragmatism and passion. A total crowdpleaser while also being something more.

Best screenplay?? WTF?? Not surprised to discover that 1 of the producers hated the script because I don't see what the fuss was about. Presumably fans of this laughed at Danny Aiello's implausibly dopey middle aged Italian (he's never heard of how to propose??) and Cage's even more implausible over-the-top cartoon, but I just found them ill-fitting w/ the rest of the film's "realism". The dog-walking grandfather is also an unnecessary character & although it gets better, the first third's dull.

This is a well-regarded comedic drama and for good reason: it is funny and well-acted by Cher. It was very enjoyable in the period in which it came out. However, I fear it's not aged well. Upon re-viewing in 2022 one can see how heavily it leans on ethnic stereotypes, some of which are cringe-worthy. It's still cute but modern viewers can't and won't see it as the innocent work 80's audiences did.
