Standard issue underdog sports drama is a handsome production (taking full lush advantage of the 20s-30s setting), but at nearly 2½ hours, there is just not enough meat on the bone to sustain the duration, especially when it’s already clearly signposted where we are headed; despite a lot of portent and melodrama, the stakes never feel particularly high, especially compared to other, better genre entries. Generally likable and enthusiastic performances help.
