Monster in a Box

This might be the worst movie ever made.

The sequel to "Swimming To Cambodia" - essentially a narrative of what happened to him after he got famous from that film. He continues to draw together all the disparate quips and quirks of his story so that they all refer back and forth to each other, like a dream, or like life. As with the earlier film, the music is beautiful, acting as under-narrative, or in some cases as commentary, to the monologue. In light of his own suicide, this film is all the more poignant and revealing.

I've seen this and Swimming to Cambodia a bunch of times, and I'd have to say this is the weaker of the two. Gray is a captivating storyteller, but here his material doesn't have quite so much punch to it. And I like Laurie Anderson, but where her ominous scoring works well in Cambodia, in this one it's often just a little too much. But perhaps I'm nitpicking. I still enjoy watching this.
