Monster Hunt

Adorable China monsters meets cute kung-fu monster hunters! Delicious sugar cute combination of live-action and animation. Perhaps a little light, or short-sighted, as far as the story goes, but for a pure entertainment pleasure this China success delivers satisfyingly.

Entertaining, albeit short on development. Some parts were silly, some funny.

Despite the mediocre CGI the monsters do have a certain cuteness to them, and as ridiculous as the narrative is the two leads are sympathetic enough to root for. So there's just enough to charm to keep you going through the down parts between the predictable moments of spectacle. It passes the time.

Although its delivery can be overwhelmingly suger-coated at times, overall I found it to be a refreshingly original and unique action-comedy with a world and characters both fun and complex enough that I'd want to revisit them again.

Sitting here in my hotel room in Xi'an has me thinking back to a year or so ago when I watched this flick. It is a wildly fantastic adventure with lots of honest family hearted type of action. The cinematography and CG use is well done and the highlight of the flick. It's goofy action is reminiscent of the people and the culture here in mainstream more modern China.

If I have to use one word to describe it, that would be "cheeky". Another one would be "forgettable". I didn't rank it on Criticker right away when I saw it, and now all I remember is, it had cute monsters.

The story takes place in a world where humanity has been at war with monsters for generations. Woba is the last of the royal bloodline of the kingdom of monsters. He embarks on a mission to unite the two races.

Being more forgiving for a kid's movie. It's a bit childish and I wasn't a fan of the monster designs, but I guess a kid could appreciate the action and some of the humour regardless of culture.
