On some level I deeply hate this movie for managing to present Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci making out as something unsexy.

A decent informative biographical serial killer film about Aileen Wuornos, tracing the events following up to her execution. Also a slap in the face to the center of prostitution and how the media acts upon it. Charlize Theron pratically looks like Wuorno in every way, from the creepy eyes to the sharp, menancing expression. Worth a watch.

Amazing and excellent performance of Theron as a prostitute. Theron is a beautiful girl but here she is fat and ugly, perfect for the role, a real drama she played. Some scenes were so funny for me of watching those horny men having sex with Theron.

Interesting characterization of a complex character and its slow loss of contact with reality. The way it is going crazy and is becoming the great merit of the film. Charlize Theron is incredibly good, everybody was used to see her in mediocre roles, in which only operated its beauty and she is totally surprising here.

Tragic, terrible and real. Torn between whether to rate based on my emotional response (horror stricken) or the artistic accomplishment (brilliant). Going to just rate based on how much I *enjoyed* it, if that's the right word. There is a lot of enjoyment in this just because it's a cinematic masterpiece. Brilliant depiction of a dark part of reality, with a neutral, humane stance on the value of the characters. But also disturbingly true to life. Stuck w/ me for years & bummed out for a week.

While convincing because of her transformation the rest of the film was flat and generic in comparison to that one aspect. Solid enough at times but faulty in others this one just can't seem to get the pacing down right and that hurts a film that has a solid central premise and such a commanding performance from a more than bankable lead.

Aynı zamanda filmin yapımcısı da o zaten. İzlerken Selby'e ayar oldum. Saçını başını yolasım geldi amcık suratlının. Ulan evde oturuyor bana ev al, araba al, bunları bana sen vaat ettin. Charlize Theron puts out the performance of a lifetime. She plays the hooker turned serial killer pretty much to perfection. There was a couple times where the sound mixing muddled the dialogue a little too much but it only briefly takes away from what is otherwise an amazing movie.

Theron really is great, and I wanted to love this, but it really starts to waver in the third act, and by the time we were into what seemed like the tenth straight minute of hysterical crying (and BT's horrendous music had taken over the soundtrack) I was pretty checked out. Up until somewhere around Scott Wilson's scene I was super into it though, so it's not a total disaster.

Fantastic performance by Theron, giving life to what is also a fantastic film. I dug the subtle and slow development of Aileen as a character as bits and pieces of her past are revealed throughout the film. Perhaps the film humanized her more than what Aileen deserved in reality, but I consider it an impressive feat to make someone sympathetic of a serial killer. I even liked the cheesy music they played, which encapsulated the delusions of grandeur of the main protagonists.

Theron's outstanding nuanced lead turn propels this gritty film to greatness, as she captures all of Aileen's insecurity, brokenness, desperation, and rage with every word and motion-subtle or severe. The quick-paced story is just as raw and unrelenting (with a great soundtrack), tarnishing its own beautiful outcast romance with scenes of heartbreaking poverty and agonizingly tragic desperation and murder, boldly refusing to spoon-feed us comfortable themes, easy morals, or a happy ending.

For a serial killer film, there's a lot more focus on the love story, which is done well thanks to some passionate performances from Theron and Ricci, though this means not as much time spent on Wuornos' motives for her murders, apart from that she wanted the money and was a bit of a misandrist. What some people will do for love ...

Brutal to sit through, but also astounding (and weirdly underrated by a lot of people). This is an amazing, complicated portrait of just how a woman like Aileen Wuornos becomes how she is. Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci are amazing (as is Scott Wilson, in the movie's most powerful scene). Yes, it's very difficult to watch, but that only adds to its power. Minor nitpick: I don't like voice-over narration that adds nothing. But that's a minor complaint.

Aileen's body language is startling and captivating. She doesn't know how to inhabit her body. Theron spends a range of small arm straightening, physical adjustments, head tosses, hair touchings, as she apprehensively attempts to shake out her anxiety and look composed. She handles her cigarettes with the insecure bluster of a 13-year-old trying to make an impact on a kid. There's but one moment in Monster when she appears comfortable, content with herself. The scene will account for itself.

Good chemistry between Ricci and Theron, and Theron's "transformation" to ugliness is impressive, but otherwise riddled with flaws. The soundtrack and licensed music could have and should have been dropped completely. The acting is uniformly overdone, especially Ricci''s character's howling cartoons of parents. The film puts on airs of being edgy and unblinking, but its Hollywood nature is often betrayed. At best Monster feels like a decent character piece; at worst it feels like a star vehicle.

A harrowing masterpiece of a performance housed in a so-so movie. Theron is, of course, stupendous, but I don't think Christina Ricci is as bad as everyone else seems to think -- she actually gives a very strong rendition of a character that's both badly written and extremely unlikeable. The screenplay and direction are just a couple steps up from Lifetime movie of the week, but this is an actor's movie, and Charlize is so good that most of the time that stuff just doesn't matter.
