Monsoon

One of those dark and sinister island dramas. This one by journey man Edgar G. Ulmer. Most of the budget must have been used on that solid cast, but Ulmer does get something out of simple effects and techniques. However like most of these cheap exotic pictures, they are a bore. And even if the evil is turned-up a few notches from your usual crime dramas, it's not enough to make Isle of Forgotten Sins (1943) a good movie.

Slow start that fits right in with second-rate Ulmer like Girls in Chains, but that long underwater sequence is downright Hawksian. The mission into an abyss pressed by the crackle of distant thunderstorm reminds me A LOT of the excavation of the Ark in Raiders.
