Less a narrative and more a snapshot of vignettes, constructing a lifelong benevolent vision of charity, virtue and morality. The writing is exceptional, and Pierre Fresnay's effective acting clearly inspired Irons for The Mission - pious, caring, and frightened of what humility looks like. It's easy to see why this is on the Vatican's list of approved films for its selfless nature, though there are some radical (for Catholics) undercurrents towards wealth and power to take special note of.
