Thanks for making a movie about the rise of Genghis Khan that did a terrible job of showing how he became Genghis Khan. The parts that might have been interesting (Temudgin gathering followers after his many travails) are COMPLETELY skipped to make room for a bad romance and sweeping visuals. The landscapes were beautiful mind you, but why not make a travelogue if that's all you want? I wanted a historically accurate war epic about Genghis Khan, and if that's what you want, don't see this.

This biopic of Genghis Khan was intended to be the first of a trilogy, but the subsequent films were never made, leaving this as a cursory examination of his youth which ends right as his military campaign was beginning. Rather than delving into the complexities of clan politics, it glosses over the building of his army and presents a fairly basic love story instead. Thankfully, it's interspersed with several scenes of extremely bloody combat to make up for this obvious shortcoming.

Feels like there's 90 minutes of necessary footage hiding somewhere that we didn't get to see: In their attempt to 'Braveheart' and 'El Cid' Genghis, they left out the conquering and focused on a romance that rang false and a yin-yang villain that seemed to incomprehensibly, quickly, amass armies. Frustrating.

Never before has the 12th century looked so cinematic, beautiful or clean. Despite the complete precedence given to aesthetics over realism, the Russian team should at least be applauded for having faith to make a foreign language arthouse epic which was not guaranteed commercial success at home or abroad. The film starts out strong but the story and characters do wane and flag through the middle and end. No amount of stunning landscapes, cinematography or camerawork can quite make up for that.

My only problem with Mongol is that--how often in life do you get to write this sentence?---Genghis Khan is a little too nice.

It does make up most of this shit whole cloth and piecemeal, but I get what they were trying to do. I mean, up until this film, Genghis was always depicted as a drooling satanic babyeater. Hell, the name of his culture is used as a derogatory synonym for the mentally handicapped-- an obvious consequence of being an illiterate, incurious person that conquered literate, curious peoples exclusively. Anyway, nice to see him at least depicted as homo sapiens. Cool battle scenes too.

Seemed like a film that had too much cut out. While the scenery was beautiful, the fight scenes a joy to watch, and the acting nicely done, the telling of the story was all over the place. Without a decent story to envelop the film, it turns to mush.

A fairly strong and emotional first act kept me interested for the entire 2-hour runtime, but dwelling upon the movie afterwards made me realize how simple the plot really was. The fight scenes and scenery were excellent, but there was nothing in the storyline to really entice me to see the rest of this Genghis Khan trilogy.

It's a strange film. It's really all brutal action, but also really slowly paced and kind of stately in tone. It's an entertaining film that I suspect is 95% fiction.

The early life of Genghis Khan reimagined as blood-stained action film - seemingly inspired by BRAVEHEART at times, with beautiful cinematography and powerful action scenes replacing any attempt at character depth or motivation, but taken as a genre entry, it is definitely a superior example, and solidly anchored by Asano's performance. Russian production fingerprints gives the almost Samurai considerations of loyalty and honour an intriguing edge.

Very solid film presents mysterious little epic journey. The mood remains tense mostly which they did very well. A few softer scenes would have went a long way

Well acted, fast paced, beautiful cinematography, and masterful direction. The only thing I could even find to complain about was the fact that it only story the first half of Genghis Khan's life but then again that's another story for another movie.

Gorgeously shot--just stunning to look at. And if you can adjust your expectations of time, it's at times compelling. But when it's as beautiful as this, waiting a bit for "something to happen" is not exactly a hardship.

It's a movie worth watching, though it's not a must watch in it's genre it's within some top % in it. It leaves me with a feeling of something missing in the film, perhaps it's because it's my second time watching this film which leaves some excitement out of it, or perhaps it's because the khan's wife her duty seems to take a lot of joy from her life which I'd kinda would like the khan see make up for, or something else idk, wouldn't call it a waste of time either way.

It's a joke, a sad imitation of the hollywoodian ingredients. A romantic sub-plot in a movie about Gengis Khan is really necessary? feels like the much more interesting parts were cutted, with all the epicness. Good cinematography and costumes but the rest it's simply dull.

Beautifully-shot and atmospheric, but spends too much time on the Khan's early life and childhood before suddenly he's Genghis Khan, ruler of the world. Choosing to skip over the entire part of his life where he rose from nothing to become Khan is disappointing, as really that's the only reason I wanted to watch the film.

I really hate how they decided to heavily fictionalized Temujin's story in order to insert some bullshit love story about him and Borte as well as some bullshit about slavery. Not to mention how much I hated how they didn't get the Mongolian swords right, and instead used some Arabian curved swords. That aside, the movie itself was rather boring and the way it paced itself and built up its drama was poorly done. How did Temujin go from recruiting soldiers to having an army the next scene?

So, so good. Amazing battles, we get a hint of strategy which is more than we usually get in these kinds of epics. The locations looked absolutely breathtaking. I know that some people were looking for more epic battles, and we may get some of those in the sequel(s), if they ever come, but I find it much more suspenseful when you have, let's say, under 50 men, and every single person counts. And also I found myself touched by the romantic story. There's nothing wrong with this movie.

An interesting look at Genghis Khan's rise to power. The pacing is wonky, dragging in some places while skipping over lots of important details in others. But it's an enjoyable movie that's beautifully shot, and the battle scenes are pretty cool.

Ghengis Khan's legacy is still prevalent in today's government and social philosophy. He did in fact truly believe that behind every great man, is a great woman. I recommend "Ghengis Khan and the making of the modern world". A fine read.

More like "Genghis Khan - The Fictitious Origin". Here I was expecting thousands of furious mongol warriors conquering and pillaging through Eurasia and we only get a couple of fights. It's also ridiculous how they make his life revolve around a silly romantic subplot. We're talking about a man who screwed as many women as his exhausted genitalia allowed him to, for god's sake.

An interesting movie. Lot's of beautifull shots, cool acting and nice t see an " epic historic movie" doing some " off beat" things (like skipping most of the major battlescenes and stopping the movie just before the " major events " in the characters life. The movie starts of a bit slow, with a lot of repatition(he get's captured, he escapes, you see him runing a loong beautifull fields and he get's captured again).. It also lacked a bit backstory on mongolian life.

Good old-fashioned epic in the mold of Braveheart, with aspirations to Kurosawa occasionally surfacing. Sets up the conflicts well, and is consistently entertaining, though for a movie that only covers the rise of Genghis Kahn, it's frustrating to see certain crucial parts elided (like, he gets out of prison and re-united with his family, and next thing you know he's commanding a vast army).

Historical accuracy is out the window and there are certainly leaps in time that leave you asking "why didn't they show us that?" All that said, it still tells a coherent and captivating story, this version of Genghis Kahn is harsh but still possible to root for, and the visuals are beautiful. Treat it as fiction and enjoy the ride.

I really enjoyed the cinematography, battle scenes, epic scope, and (fictionalized as it may be) depiction of Genghis Khan's early life. That said, the abrupt shift from "I must gather an army" to him having his massive army and engaging in the final battle in literally the next scene was ridiculously jarring, and makes Mongol feel like a 3.5-hour movie that's been edited down to 2. I'll certainly see the sequels, though.

Pretty messy. They put you through several bizarre events that may have happened to the young Khan (before he was Khan). But some were completely made up, and others happened quite differently. I guess really big events, like taking over half of the world, were left out for a sequel? Solid acting and awesome scenery make it bearable though.
