Aaron Sorkin's directorial debut goes about how you might expect: there's a great screenplay and lots of potential, but decisions made in the edit slightly hamper Molly's Game's pace, making the film a bit too long. The performances here are stellar though, especially those of Elba and Chastain; their chemistry also makes their back-and-forth attorney-client relationship believable. This is a highly entertaining and never boring film, even though it does feel more loose than it should.

Presumably Sorkin - a super-successful & seemingly intelligent ex-addict - empathizes a great deal with Molly Bloom's travails even though they're entirely the result of a shady career choice she certainly didn't need to make. He likes her so much, he even seems to believe that despite her decision to make her fortune in the legally iffiest way possible, she's simultaneously a paragon of integrity, a casino w/ a heart of gold... His exhausting rat-a-tat-tat dialogue didn't help me buy any of it.

Molly's Game is a solid directorial debut for Aaron Sorkin. It has an interesting plot that's told well. It has strong dialogue, engaging characters, just enough comedy, and a great performance from Jessica Chastain. It's a bit long and might not be as well-rounded as some other Sorkin efforts--it's singularly focused on Molly; its supporting cast members are intriguing but the film doesn't do much with them--but it's quite a bit of fun and certainly a story worth telling.

Although it's a technically confident directorial debut, it may've been better for Sorkin to have instead worked on another draft. This film can certainly be engaging, often in an entertaining manner, but it also suffers from over-explanation and a few too many corny speeches, as if the film is trying its best to paint Molly as nothing other than a heroine. It sometimes succeeds in showing her moral concerns with herself, but the worst courtroom scene in history at the end negates that.

Amidst the cultural tidal wave of the #MeToo movement, MG couldn't have hit theaters at a more opportune time: the story of a headstrong and defiant young woman trying to make her mark in a staunchly patriarchal society. At least, this is the idealised version of reality Sorkin presents us with, when in fact, Bloom was nothing but a naive opportunist in way over her head who, instead of serving time for her illegal activities, somehow got a free pass and an interview on Ellen DeGeneres. MURICA!

This is nicely made and cast, and the story is reasonably interesting, but it felt like it needed a bit of sharpening up; it drags at a couple of points, and the sense of jeopardy didn't feel acute enough. It certainly held my attention, though, despite a few clunky moments. Chastain did really well with a challenging part, but this needed more Jeremy Strong.

Noted insufferably smug and superior Hollywood douchebag Aaron Sorkin writes some dialogue that just sings, here and everywhere else, and the way the movie jumps back and forth through time calls The Social Network to mind. The voiceover is a bit much but I got into the movie’s mix of poker and crime and general hustling and enjoyed watching the actors bounce that Sorkin dialogue back and forth.

Sorkin misses the mark with Molly's Game creating a movie that is as uncompelling as it is shallow. The film carries Sorkin's signature fast-paced dialogue built around #feminism Twitter comments; this would have been passable had it not been delivered primarily by the unlikable, unsympathetic main character. Chastain's performance is great, as is Elba's, but the end result is a film that is tonally smug, crutching onto a Hollywood ending.

Infectiously dynamic, tautly directed and, as expected, perfectly written, this is a movie that catches the attention and never lets go, featuring a beguiling performance by Chastain. Its one sin is pacing and a reluctance from Sorkin to remove unnecessary fat.

Very entertaining and fun in that usual Sorkin way - not his best, but very far from his worst. Chastain gives an incredible performance, while the editing is propulsive and nicely paced except for when it slows down for these really unnecessary scenes with schmaltzy scores Sorkin included for some reason. And of course he had to have her shitty abusive father be redeemed at the end. But it's a blast and having Michael Cera play Tobey Maguire is hilarious.

I'm not one for talking at the movies but audible groan and oooofs heard when the Canucks game 7 loss flashed across the screen was warranted. It's hard to go wrong when you have Chastain and Elba as the leads and a Sorkin script. Sorkin's direction is also impressive, making this whole thing a snappy, quick, and entertaining affair. You certainly get the feeling that Bloom is being lionized a bit too much here, but I can accept this as entertainment and not a documentary.

I've handled Sorkin's anal-retentive style okay in the past, at least in some films. And I'm sure there's a much better film hiding inside this, or possibly in the source material, but here Sorkin's telling is just too manufactured to sustain any sort of an illusion.

Molly's Game is one of the better poker/gambling films in quite some time. While it isn't ground breaking, it excutes almost everything it needed to. The acting, especially from Chastain and Alba are excellent on all levels, on top of some great pacing, especially one that runs 240 min, and more importantly, does a great job of developing and presenting the character that Molly Bloom was. Truly a great adaptation of a interesting character in our world today.

An unengaging directorial debut from Sorkin. Nothing about this film is properly fleshed out, underwhelming coming from Sorkin. I feel JC was miscast, so was Elba. MG to me feels like another TV film. The structure along with the pacing is all quite uninteresting, the running time overlong. Better luck next time, Sorkin, or stick to what you're good at.

Sorkin's directorial debut is a somewhat uneven, occasionally clunky rendering of his own screenplay, which nevertheless tells a fascinating story, anchored by Chastain's superb performance and the contributions of a well-chosen supporting cast (though Elba feels underutilised). Inevitably provokes comparisons with THE SOCIAL NETWORK, and MOLLY could have benefited from a director more removed from the screenplay to tighten things up a bit.

Decent enough movie that lacked feels. I can't stand the smart-ass dialogue used to show strong feminine character. The one-liners and quips with her attorney were so cringy. As was the over-the-top speech from the Defense to the DA. Molly was presented as this perfect heroine, so it was difficult to sympathize when she went through being a drug addicted criminal with daddy issues. Obviously it was well-acted and well-written.

Started out in a fast-paced, breezy style. Then slows to a crawl. Nearly an hour too long. There's barely 90 minutes of story here. The story (organizing poker games) isn't interesting, and the main character isn't likable. Chastain plays her from opening shot, to final credits as one note: "sullen". All the crazy highs and lows and she never cracks a smile even once? Geesh. And the coup de grace, the "Daddy issues" scene is the most embarrassing thing I've seen in quite some time. Ugh.

There's only one word that could ever aptly describe "Molly's Game", and that word is "powerhouse". Both the directorial debut of master screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, and the source of a career-defining performance from the marvellous Jessica Chastain, it's an adaptation of a story so tailor-made for the screen that it's hard to believe it ever happened. It's slick, fast-paced, sublimely written, and deliriously entertaining from start to finish, even if it runs a hair long. A true royal flush.

Jessica Chastain could not be more of a treasure if she tried - but she certainly gives it her all in this kinetic, driven performance of a woman with axes to grind and an unwavering demand to succeed. Sorkin delivers an excellent time-hopping screenplay that never detaches the audience from the narrative, and grounded, competent direction. This story is unbelievable and at the same time, very much believable, bolstered by a talent-laden supporting cast. Elba kills. This was an absolute treat.

Watch: Theater isn't required, but a damn good story | The pacing is excellent, the characters are well done, the story has the excitement of a heist movie but is careful to have us rooting for the main character because she actually did no wrong and is a good person. There's a couple parts that are super cheesy, but I forgive them because the rest is so well told.

If you think about it, all the trademarks of Sorkin's worst liberal drivel are there - the Hillary-esque smarter-than-you woman protagonist, a psychoanalysis scene on gender dynamics begging for self-awareness, and of course the truly hilarious ending where the judge drops an epic burn on Wall Street to solve everything. On the other hand, if you shut off your brain, it's a pretty good approximation of the late-capitalism thrills of something like Social Network or Wolf of Wall St.

The music (and how Sorkin uses it) is pretty bad and cheesy, and it hurts the movie. Even if only a little. I kind of appreciated the Scorsese-and-Fincher-fanboyism, but Sorkin's not the greatest director, when it comes to putting together imagery and sound. When it comes to getting performances out of actors, or simply casting the right ones, though - kudos, Sir. I don't know if this is just my favorite script of his or if this is simply the best implementation of his dialogue I've seen so far.

This movie has its fair share of problems (over-narration, editing inconsistencies, flat characters), but in the end, I think anyone's reaction to this movie comes down to Sorkin's dialogue. For me, the snappiness of the dialogue got tired quickly, and while they provide some short-term entertainment I was never bored out of my mind they go at the expense of realism and character development. I just couldn't get myself to care about a world where everyone speaks in one-ups and one-liners

The filmmaker really goes into bat for the entrepreneuse here, which raises the possibility that he himself may have allowed his reason to succumb to her charms, but I'm not aware of any way in which the narrative deviates significantly from the facts (which doesn't prove much of anything, especially since there's probably no way to know the true nature of the most important of those facts). The film itself successfully entertains: even the three-minute therapy session was fun and interesting.

I didn't (and still don't) know a thing about the real world events that inspired the book and subsequent film but I enjoyed the story as presented here. As you would expect, the Sorkin dialogue drives the entire movie in his usually snappy rapid fire style. As for his direction, I'm not so sure it measures up to his screen writing and the runtime feels a little long. I also have to say I didn't really think too much of Chastain, but then I never do for some reason which I honestly can't explain

Sorkin did great job for his directorial debut but J.Chastain steals the show. After Miss Sloane this is the second time when she dominates screen and her narration captivates audience. Strong female roles are really her thing.

Sorkin at his worst. Chastain at her best. Ultimately Molly's Game is a failure. It never got me to root for it's main character, although (maybe because) it is trying so hard and the sorkinshe psychoanalysis was never flatter. And yet again... it was crazy entertaining!

A well told story with great performances. Some parts of the script that felt factitious and a few scenes that I questioned Sorkin's depth. However, the actual story is definitely thought provoking on one's path in life and how they define success. Definitely a story to be told.

Boy they really focused on how noble she was with not revealing names when we know Tobey McGuire was the asshole (who was made less of an asshole in the movie for some reason) and Affleck and A-Rod were involved and she has no real problem mentioning it now. Also whenever they had a character use poker lingo it sounded terrible. The acting is what makes this movie better than average and more watchable than the script and run time probably deserve.

Aaron Sorkin always has great rants in his scripts that sound like they're saying something profound but don't really seem to mean anything. That seems like this whole movie to me. It's a pleasant enough diversion...

I could watch Chastain and Elba banter in Sorkinese forever and not get bored. Unfortunately, the writer lacks the directorial chops to carry his own words.

A focused and tight drama about a woman who was bound to leave her mark on the world, and did. There was one bit at the end that felt forced to a point of being contrived, but other than that Sorkin does a great job in his directorial debut. Quick dialogue and a lot of wit in this.
