I tried to approach this adaptation free of prejudice and frankly I adored it. The sea worn, bleached purgatory cinematography, the staging and editing straight out of a Soviet silent moral tale, the dialogue that is made real only as it approaches an otherworldly poetry. It's a literate film and it damn well should be. The performances are remarkably commanding - if Welles regularly recited Spurgeon sermons I'd be that much closer to Christ.

I'm a whalehunter and I'm okay I sing all night and I sail all day. Gregory Peck did a great job though.

I would have given it more, but unfortunately, the ending was too theatrical and it became impossible for me to take it seriously.

Seemed like an underrated classic until Gregory Peck shows up.

Basada en la obra de Herman Melville, se narra, así como en la novela, la lucha del hombre contra la mítica ballena Moby Dick. Se podría emular a la lucha ser humano contra la naturaleza, tópico que se puede encontrar en El facundo de Sarmiento.

This one would be a good candidate for a remake. It's more theater than a movie, often due to trying to stay too close to the literary original. (The few times it adds something that wasn't in the original are questionable too.)

Till the finale, when the whale effects turn it into a comedy, it's all foreshadowing and biblical doom prophecies, only interrupted by a five minute oratory about God knows what by none other than Orson Welles, and then some happy whale killing. The movie looks as if the negative was smeared with brown watercolor.

As a commendably faithful Moby Dick adaptation, it still feels rushed - not for a second do you believe that these men are on a 3-year voyage, nor is there time for the weight of the story to really hit home. But Peck is perfect.

Flawed take on the famous tale, impaired by the slow tempo and the choice of desaturating the colors making much of the movie not only ugly but actually hard to comprehend. Still there's a lot to admire on the ground level and Peck's originally maligned performance has grown with the years.

Gripping, somber shipboard drama is fired by an uncharacteriscally glowering, smouldering performance by Peck (love those staring contests with the camera lens) and Huston's distinctively laconic, amused sense of humour in some of his directorial choices. Supporting cast are also fine (with Andrews adding fine support as a salty sea dog) but it is really Peck's film, leading to an exciting climax, if somewhat dated effects wise.

The dated and quite frankly pedestrian movie-making skills that are featured, makes the overall impression feel more stale, than the religious fable, that serves as the source material. There is one effectively executed scene, where the whalers wait for Dick (no sexual insinuations intended), as seaguls swoop around them, adding to the eerie tension. Essentially it is a disappointing build-up that leads to the awesome climax, and thus 'Moby Dick' should be watched in 'Nostalgi-vision' only.

Not a great film, but enjoyable none-the-less. Excellent cameo from Orson Welles

Wow. This is a *lot* worse than I remember it being when I saw it on TV when I was a child. You just can't take this "great adventure story on the high seas" shit seriously if you are an enlightened citizen of the 21st century and therefore know that (a) whales are an endangered species, (b) life onboard a 19th-century ship must have been cold and hard and miserable, and (c) the all-male crew must have been constantly buggering each other in the wee hours of the morning

I had no idea until just this moment that Ray Bradbury was involved in this movie. This movie has drawn me to Melville's novel which is bible-like in its proportions and has impacted my life in large ways. I'm still picking away at it. Hooray for Gregory Peck!
