I'm not sure how this stacks up against the book but I don't think I could care less. The somewhat promising premise finally falls flat on its face by the third and final act. All of the "intelligent" schticks will have you rolling your eyes. In short, this is only a must see for goth teenagers who are dying to see Jack Skellington in a live action movie as a giant, numbskull, lame pseudo-villain. Man, this was really juvenile, even for Burton's standards.

I quite enjoyed this fantasy romp from Tim Burton. I did not read the novel, but it does seem like a film that would either be hated or loved by fans of the original material. The pacing slows down and Samuel L. Jackson is totally miscast, but the rest of the cast does just fine. I personally liked Tim Burton's use of visual effects, lighting, and production design. If you're in the mood to see something with the family this Halloween this (might) up your ally. I would say it's worth a viewing.

Starring Tim Burton's new Bonham-Carter-of-the-month, Eva Green, Miss Peregrine's House for Woefully Disinclined Miscreants is a story (based on true events) about several mutants from Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters who, with the aid of a young mudblood who knows where to find them, fight fantastical beasts (all played by Samuel L. Jackson) on Groundhog's Day.

It starts out promising, but that's about all it has going for it. Seeing Tim Burton do Southern Gothic was kind of nice, but then it becomes a parade of white people being weird for a while, but I just don't care anymore, and I don't think Tim Burton does either for that matter. As INDYATMN said, Tim Burton made something that could have been twisted and grotesque into an X-Men movie. Also, again, what is with all the messy time-travel fuckery???? Can we just stop, please?????????????

Tim Burton strikes me as a director that's out of things to say and this movie is no different. Eccentric pale people find themselves in eccentric situations and their inner eccentricity empowers them to overcome difficult hurdles. However, it's not terrible, with some beautiful visuals, a likable cast, and an alluring premise, but ultimately it devolves into videogame-mode towards the end, with cheesy "boss" battles and lazy writing. Children might enjoy this more than adults.

Stranger than I expected, which is mostly a good thing. The story never really takes off, but many scenes were so characteristically Burton that I couldn't help but smile. It's light on anything resembling substance and therefore completely forgettable, but it's good escapist fun if you like Tim Burton.

I'm tired of special kids, I bring it up pretty often, this one advertises it right on the cover, so I don't have a really good excuse for watching it, but I was hoping it would be...better. Burton knows how to do one thing, he makes things look weird, so sure, he did it here, but who cares? Especially when the plot basically has no internal logic, no explanation, and the explanations that are present fall apart if you think about them for longer than a nanosecond.

There's a lot of examples of good literature that has been made into bad movies. This movie is a good example of how uninspired novels are hard to make into interesting movies. The costume design is good, but very Burton-like and Eva Green essentially looks like a young version of H.B. Carter. The movie's actually more stringent than the book(s), but not worth the big sums of money it cost.

They changed a lot from the book, which I'm mostly okay with, since the book tended to wander off in every direction and get lost. Maybe they sheared off too much, but now it's a fast, action-packed story with good visuals and really creepy monsters, that I suspect Burton stole from somewhere, but I don't remember where so I'm going to give him a pass. And Jackson repeats his role from Kingsman.

The blandification of Burton continues with M.P.H.F.P.C, a faceless film that could have easily been made by any other famous tentpole director. Sure it has traces of his gothic sensibility, but the style is so watered down that it barely registers. With the exception of Ed Wood, when he strays too far from his strengths he invariably fails, and while Miss Peregrine isn't a complete failure, its cliched plot and flat characters struggle to maintain interest despite its visual charm.

After a few flops in the row I stopped caring about Tim Burton movies. It seems like he is just going through the motions of being Tim Burton, and doing his dark fantasies without any flair. This is YA fantasy (that will probably become trilogy) that can't really hold interest of non-YA. Eva Green looks great in black. Protagonist acts like he is a Pinocchio. Story is simply uninspired.

Burton's direction seemed more disinterested than I've seen before. The whole thing was a pretty tiresome slog, just full of clichés and superficial characters and situations. Visually, it's pretty nice looking, but it doesn't help the bland characters and the lack of emotional engagement. Butterfield was not good in this. Like, bordering on bad, even. Eva Green and Samuel L. Jackson definitely brought some energy to it, but not enough to save the film. Very forgettable, overall.

Tim Burton's X-Men meets Groundhog Day. This is the best film he's made in a decade and I really enjoyed it despite the way too camp Eva Green and Sam Jackson, despite the story being wrongly focused (and a bore) and despite the entire last hour being outright bad. I adored the universe and characters. Wish it had relaxed a bit more.

I like Tim Burton's movies. I felt like he hadn't done an actual Tim Burton movie since the 1990s (but that's just my opinion). I liked it a lot. It was silly, it had plot holes, but so do most of his other classic movies. Not his best work, but enjoyable nonetheless. Go watch it, shut down your brain, and let it entertain you!

Burton continues his decades-long streak of shaving the edges off unusual/distinctive source material in order to appeal to as large an audience as possible. (Had he made the entire film as creepy as the black & white fotos that distinguished the novel, he might've actually made something memorable.) However, this time he seems lazier than ever serving up an entire roster of X-Men w/ undifferentiated personalities & not bothering to clarify the rules of this world (esp the confusing ending).

The first half is engaging and whimsical. The second is a complete mess that pretty much turns into a cartoon. I've never seen Sam Jackson dial it up to 11 like that. His performance increases the camp factor, for better or worse. I don't think Burton is aiming for camp, but I could be wrong. There are enough memorable moments to give an overall recommendation, nothing more.

I haven't genuinely liked a Burton film since the early 90's and this doesn't break that streak. It has some good performances (Eva Green and Terence Stamp, but NOT Butterfield, O' Dowd or Jackson) and one really great action sequence where an army of skeletons fight invisible monsters in an amusement park, but otherwise it's a puzzling mess.

Another frustratingly generic effort from Burton has an intriguing premise, and a fine cast to back it up, but once the initial world is established, the film falls into a knock-off HARRY POTTER/BIG FISH clone, both in terms of story and mood, trudging its way through a dreary and repetitive mid-section. Salvaged somewhat by the cast, with Jackson suitably creepy with white eyes and fright wig, and Stamp who is surprisingly convincing (and even lovable) as the stoic grandparent.

Essentially just a poor man's (fellow Jane Goldman-scripted film) X-Men: First Class, just set another twenty years back and Tim Burtoned up. I actually like it more than most of Burton's work this century - which is to say I don't find it completely unwatchable - but it's also horribly bogged down in exposition for practically its entire runtime. Some of the calmer more domestic stuff after the kid gets to the school is actually pretty fun. The CGI action finale is a generic bore though.

This was a surprisingly entertaining fantasy film. Miss Peregrine's definitely has its own share of writing and editing problems, but the solid visual effects and generally good performances (especially from the child actors) mask them pretty well. The pacing is a little variable and drags a bit in the second act; however, the climax makes up for it. The characters feel as real as they can with actual motivations, making the film an emotional success as well. It's not perfect, but it works.

It's much better than I had expected it to be and I do feel like it's a breath of fresh air for Burton, a much-needed new start. The concept is great, the set design is gorgeous and there is an intense ominous yet playful feeling about it, very Gothic. It does fall flat with its villains though; even without its dodgy racial politics, the execution of this part of the plot just seems rushed and anticlimatic. Also, I feel like Eva Green is doing Bonham-Carter in this one, and it's uncanny.

Following clues left behind by his murdered grandfather, Jacob (Asa Butterfield, a bit livelier than usual) discovers the titular home and its inhabitants, living within a time loop which protects them from the outside world...but not from malevolent magical forces. It's Tim Burton doing "Tim Burton", allowing a convoluted mythology and a murky (especially in the final movement) narrative to weigh down a few engaging moments and an expensive production. Not bad as such, but hardly memorable.

Adapting interesting source material with a slightly more muted effort on Burton's part makes this film an enjoyable watch, for the most part. As with most Burton films, I enjoyed the visual aspects; the monsters and set pieces, and the music. Unfortunately, his ability to build a strong narrative in a consistent world has dwindled. With the many uses of time-loops, he never conveys a system that is safe from exploitation, and characters seem to wait for the action to finish behind closed doors.

Burton sheds some of his artistic edge when he's directing someone else's script, that's for sure. One of the shortcomings of the film is that it tries hard to cram a whole book of material into one movie, which leaves a lot of loose ends. The whole pg13 vibe also detracts from an otherwise passable experience. Okay on its own, not memorable by Burton's standarts.

In many ways, director Tim Burton's big-screen take on author Ransom Riggs 2011 book, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, is a lot like most other young adult fantasies you might think of. There's good battling evil. There are monsters and heroes. There are wise, shepherding adults and equally wicked ones. There are adolescents discovering their identities and abilities for the first time and putting them to good use. (pluggedin.com)

Boy, I dunno about a lot in this one. It went from absolutely god-awful to soundly entertaining in a slow, progressive manner, but the last thirty minutes still has some issues. Butterfield is shockingly wooden; gonna chalk that one up to Burton, who clearly doesn't care at all anymore. Nothing in this film suggests a directorial vision. He's become Hollywood's go-to weirdo whenever they have a, well, peculiar property. Overall I didn't dislike it, but I don't think I'll watch it again.

A real standout through the first three quarters of it, but the story goes lame after that. A reliance on monsters is the Achilles's Heel which just cheapens the whole thing. Eva Green is a complete package and scene stealer, while Samuel L. Jackson is severely crippled by his character. Couple of plot holes: what was the lead in for the (good guy?) skeletons at the amusement park, and how did Emma get her lead shoes back to the surface after the first time down to the ship?

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is another largely uninteresting young adult movie about "the special" being the only one to save his group of friends. This time, there are superpowers - but that isn't enough to engage the audience. The hammy adult characters and director Tim Burton's signature visual style can't hold our interest, either. It takes too long to explain itself, leading to an abbreviated plot and bland characters.
