Miss Lulu Bett

The other de Mille has a thoughtful approach to this melodrama. And there is a certain sad comedic undertone to the story of an extremely unappreciated old maid. Perhaps the take is a little too understated, however, to really fully engage modern audiences. In the lead, however, Lois Wilson delivers an authentic take that only occasionally falls into silent theatrics.

Some moments are funny, Lulu is a sympathetic character and the general story is an engaging one, but the execution could be better. The pacing is off, spending lots of time on tedium and rushing through the potentially interesting drama, which makes it more of a chore to watch than it should.
